The Gorge
#1
Went up to the Gorge this last weekend and I must say it was pretty good. We did real well on the koke's. We even caught a few in the 3.5 pound range. We caught most of our fish on needle fish and salmon squids with a flasher down 50 to 60 feet. We also fished for bass in the afternoon but the smallie fishing was pretty slow. My brother did manage to catch one that was right around the 3.5 pound range. He caught it on a stick worm made by Maniac lures. He was using the changeable craw color. That color is kick butt up there and it seemed to catch the bigger fish. I fished my fail safe tube but it acutally failed and I had to tie on one of those maniacs. We were spit shotting the 4 inch stick worm with about 3 feet of liter it seemed to work the best. We tried wacky rigging and drop shot. The split shot was the ticket for us.

Hey what part of the lake were you fishing? I was there also this weekend, I don't know much about mack's or koke's I tried to fish for awhile but I felt very inadequate so I gave up and went after sometime I know about BASS! I need to go with someone that knows what there doing to catch them. As forthe bass we had to boat at least 50 fish maybe a 75. It was big fun.

What's a stick worm? I've heard them talked about on here a lot lately, and I have no idea what that is.

I am sure what a stick worm is never used one. I use senkos or any type of plastic worm will work.

hee hee! [Tongue] A Senko IS a stickworm!!! lol

I just started using them and DANG they work great for both smallies and bucketmouths. I caught two nice sized largemouths at Deer Creek with them and a few small smallies my first time trying them! Chartreuse and white are great colors. Sportsmans has them, and Walmart has a cheaper version of them called Kinami baits too. Similar are also zipper worms and a half dozen other copycats.

Deepcycle we were fishing up around Buckboard area. If you want to find the kokes just look for the boats. As for the stick worms we were using they look just like Senko's. The only thing is Senko's colors suck and they have to much salt which makes them fall apart. I started using Mainiac lures brand because of the color selection and the durability of the worm. I tell you what I have fished with them at Jordanell and at the gorge and they kick some serious butt. You can get them off the Web sight or from Anglers Den. You can buy the worms off the internet pretty cheap compared to senkos or the other sticks. By the way those 50 plus smallies did they have any size?

Senko is a worm type bait made by Gary Yamamato out of Page AZ.
His stuff is hot senkos, grubs, hula grubs, etc. all work well for smallmouths and largemouth bass lots of colors very cool products.
Can be purchased at Fish Tech, Sportsman Warehouse, or Online at his website, Hopes this helps you.

Thanks Skeeter for the info. about the Gorge if I get a chance I might make it back this summer for them kokes. You are right about Yamamoto products are pricey I have not found anything to replace them with the same amount of success. I will try your baits and get back to you Thanks. Most of the smallies are dinks just like most places but I but did hook a few well over a pound or two but nothing like Nelle but we did catch way more then we do at Nelle, 50 was a very conservative guess I am sure.
I did read something about a state record coming from the Gorge but it might of been about WY. it was posted on the wall in the store at Lucurene?? bay.

Yamamoto definitly has some great products I have several different grubs made by Yamamoto. But when it comes to the stick worms you might want to give the mainiacs a try especially the changeable craw color. I have to say I have always been a tube jig and grub fisherman for the smallies. After fishing with the craw imitation stick I'm sold. I'm not saying that it will out produce all other lures but so far it has in our boat. If you have any questions on the Koke's give me a P.M. and I can tell you what I know.
