Being one of the "new kids" on smallies, I have really had good luck with Senkos. The basic fishing technique and rigging is simple. That said, it is more important how you fish a given lure and where you are fishing than what you are using. (IMHO)

Crap! I just made a huge post about this. and hit the wrong key.
Now its gone.
So, heres the short version.
Sorry about that.
Look, bass are fish, fish that do a variety of things, live in a variety of depths and on structure and in a variety of cover forms. They react to water temps, and food supply as well as lures that trigger reaction responses.

So, that being said, dont put all your eggs in one basket.
Get a variety of lures that will put you on fish in a variety of situations.
Some days the fish just dont key in on plastics and reaction batis like lipless cranks rip them up. dont be without one or two.
Some days the fish get negative or neutral, and they require that you hang a lure in front of their face for long periods of time. suspending husky jerks cant be beat by any plastic or other bait in these situations.
You will want a variety of plastics like senkos tubes, curl tails, and reapers.

If you came in to see me at sportsmans, this is the list I would give you.
1) maniac custom senkos. in the changeable craw color. You cant get these at sportsmans yet, but I am working on that. Hooked in kaysville has them, or you can get them on line at the www.maniaccustomlures.com site.
2) strike king bitsy tubes in the green pumpkin color. We are sold out of these at the riverdale sportsmans, at the moment, but you can get them at most walmarts.
3) kamakazee reapers in B.L. special available at sportsmans. These are made out of idaho and are an awesome bait.
4) Kalin curl tails in greens and browns.
5) lipless cranks from bill lewis traps in chrome and the chartruse back. or a lipless rattle trap in the red craw with the yellow belly.
6) a rapala HJ-8 SUSPENDING husky jerk in clown color.
7) strike king bitsy bug skirted jig in blue and black.

If you get one of each of those you should be under $25.00 and be able to get into smallmouth bass anywhere in just about any situation.
But as was said, you will have to learn how, where, and when to use these baits.

You will develop your favorites, and the lures that get you your fish will become your "confidence" lures, but on those days that the confidence baits arent working, you will have the others. Tie one on, and you will then have two confidence baits. Plus a little bit better knowledge of when to use each lure.

The best tip anyone can give you is to diversify your tackle and skills. Fish adapt to conditions, you need to be able to as well.

[#804000] Tubes are cheaper and expendable. Senkos are pricey but worth it. These can be used in all seasons. 1/0 hooks are for tubes. I use 2/0 or 3/0 hooks for senkos. Texas rig them both. Its the only way to go. Plus, you can get slimers this way to. [/#804000]
