Kokes at the Gorge
#1
Went to the Gorge this weekend, while the whole Wasatch Front was socked into smoke and dust from all that wind.
We anchored and tied up over a school of kokanee, and Friday evening & Saturday morning was a blast!
Buzz Bombs were best, but at times just changing to a big flashy spoon would attrack one when things slowed. Fish were in the 3 to 5 pound class, with an occasional mac or rainbow thrown in for good measure.
Just off the rocky edges and cliff walls, search for schools with your finder. These things were stacked up for 10 feet, from the bottom up. Hot and cold spells happened too, but it you take a minute to grab a snack, they'd come right back to activity.
Some of the fish are turning red already, and the males have that great hooked jaw going. But about as many kokes were still silvery too.
Get up there before the end of the month, and you'll do well!

Great report. We were up there two weekends ago with similar results. We caught a few decent macs in with the kokes and even one SMB in 60 feet of water. There are a lot of kokes running in the rivers as well. What general area of the Gorge were you fishing?

Without being so specific that the guys I fish with will dis-own me ... near the pipeline, along the rocky face cliffs. Just slow troll along with your depth finder until you find a school, and go after 'em! / We're going back this weekend too.
Good luck!

Now that sounds good: bring on the ice! But I'd say those ponds are on their way to freezing. Getting a little cooler every day.
We used to fish Causey often, and did well at times with kokes. They really school up under the ice, running much closer to the surface than in summer. But we quit going after a friend went up a few years ago, cut a hole, had no water coming sloshing up, only to find that since the ice cap had formed, the water had been drawn down about 10 feet! Kind of spooked us.
But near the rocky ledges, fishing with a flasher, you can see those kokanee come through, and it can be as fast as you put down and drag one up!
Good fishin'!
