keeping hands warm.
#1
Hello! It's actually me this time! I remember there was a discussion last year of how to keep your hands warm while fishing, and I don't remember what was said, but does anyone have any suggestions how to do this successfully? I tried rubber gloves inside my gloves, but it doesn't work. Any advice would be helpful, as Ocean is going to drag me all over fishing this winter!!!!![Tongue]

I don't know what was said last year either. But I use wool gloves with the fingers cut off, that have a pull over mitten to keep your fingers warm. I usually bring along two pair, because you always get them wet and slimy. Good luck on the ice this year!

[cool]I use the same thing, maniac, and love them. Those gloves rule!! I lost my pair from last year, so I just bought a new pair. Only $10 at Sportsmens, but James at Hooked might have some too.

Hi Mrs. O, here is the link to that discussion last year. There was lots of good input from lots of different angles.

Hello Mrs Ocean,
I too suffer from frozen hands. well, just my fingertips actually. I've tried everything I can think of & I still end up with frozen digits! I'm going to take a look at the link that was posted from last years discussion. I'm sure theres some great advice in there! Good Luck[Smile]

They make propane heaters that put out nearly as much heat as the sun. Make a deal with ocean. These will keep your hands warm and you can still feel the lite bite.

If you have a ice shack they make catalytic propane heaters specifically for indoors.

I like the idea of increasing mobility by decreasing stuff (like heaters and tents) so I bought a nice pair of snowboarding mittens and a cheap pair of thin gloves. (they are womens gloves but don't tell anyone OK) There is plenty of room to put hand warmers in the mittens which will keep the mittens warm when I take them off. As for the lite bite, I hope to master the bobber technique.

Two words - Dry Hands!
Wet hands are going to be cold hands. When ice fishing, I take high quality Cabelas Gortex/Thinsulate gloves and a towel with me. When I land a fish, I remove my gloves temporarily to unhook and release the fish and then wipe hands dry with the towel and put my gloves back on. Nice and toasty warm. If I'm casting in open water, I will often use the wool fingerless gloves and the towel and a hand warmer in my pocket.

Hello, New member here. I've read the posts a lot but never joined. Concerning keeping your hands warm. I've gone to using a good quality pair of tongs with a rubber coated handle. I hang it from my belt or wrist with a cord. When I catch a fish the tongs fit very nicely around the mid-section of most fish, (expecially perch). I am able to reach into the water with the tongs and hold the fish still while I remove the fishhook with my other hand. This keeps my hands from even getting wet. I don't even have to remove my gloves.

[cool]Welcome to the board, PerchPile! Those tongs sound like a good idea when catching a nice big 'ole "perchpile," but I don't know how effective that would be on a nice 20 inch 2-3 lb Cutthroat from the 'berry. I'm gonna keep that in mind for panfish, though!

Only another month or so for the perchies through the ice!! That should be a lot of fun. Can't wait to get up to Echo & Rockport, but until then, there's safe ice for trout up at Hunington, and soon Scofield, so that's where I'm headed until then!

Thanks for the welcome! I thought I did post it "here". What did I do wrong? The tongs do work well on trout up to about a pound and a half. I expermented with quite a few before I found the ones that work best. Use good quality, spoon type on both sides with wavey teeth around the edges.

I think I will try the Neoprine gloves by Shimano. [#bf0000]They sound like they would keep you pretty warm, but Kentofinsl said they didn't keep him warm. I don't know, but we went fishing last Saturday at Yuba, in the snow, and my hands froze!!!!![Sad] Hopefully that will do the trick. Good luck to you in your search!![/#bf0000]
