Good article. I am with Brett Prettyman, no matter how thick that ice is I never get used to that ice popping. A few years ago I walked all the way across the bay at The Ladders, with Utwalleye, on about 3 to 3 1/2 inches of slick ice. In crossing that bay there was never a time that we walked more than 10 feet without crossing a crack in the ice that had refrozen. In the afternoon that ice started popping (sounded like 12 guage shotguns being fired) and the water in the ice holes started going up and down. At that point I asked Chuck if his ice shack would float, and he just laughed. CBR, just remember Jame's (HFT's) safety tip, if you hear the ice pop you immediately jump on the ice with your arms and legs spread out as far as you can. It won't make any difference in your safety, but it sure will give everyone else a good laugh! You can also immediately jump to the side, just make sure you jump the right direction (LOL).

All the old guys, Ken - I thought you were one of them[shocked], say that if the ice doesn't "talk" to you, you're in trouble.

"if the ice doesn't "talk" to you, you're in trouble." Not me, I would be thrilled if the ice would grow (personally I think it might be an old wive's tale that the popping sound means the ice is only growing) while I am not standing on it! I have heard the ice popping at night (even a little scarier than having it pop in daylight), and I have heard it popping in the warmest time during the day. Personally, I think it pops when it is growing, and I also think it pops when it is melting.
