Is Birch Creek or Woodruff accessible?
#1
I was wondering what the winter access to Birch Creek or Woodruff are? It's been a very long time since I've been to either place. If I remember correctly you have to hike up the dam, and then back down at BC. Is this still the case? Do you guys think either place is accessible with an ATV or a Sled? Or can you drive into them? Thanks.

When I was much younger we used to catch some decent bows out of there. I'd like to try it when it has some hard water on it, but I don't know if I can get in.

At Birch Creek they have not historically plowed the dirt road up to the face of the dam. You would want a snowmobile or good four wheeler to get to it. Also, you still do need to hike up the face of the dam. Finally, I fished it this fall and the water was very low. Can't say about Woodruff. I did not fish it this year and have never ice fished it.

Thanks for the information. I talked with a guy from Randolph, and he says there is about 6 inches of snow at his place, but he hasn't heard anything about the road to BC or to Woodruff. I may chance the road to BC on my ATV....but if we can't make it, then head up to Woodruff.

I know both of them are low, so I wanted to hit them early in case there is a winter kill.

One other question. Was the lower reservoir empty last fall?

No. The state has a C-pool at Birch Creek but it's not a very big one. The res was definitely less that half full.

Hey TKB,

There's Tiger trout up there at Birch Creek. They had a fishing trip up there on channel 2 with Reese Stein this fall. They were catching some nice size tigers(17-20"). I wouldn't mine giving it a try if you need some one to go with you.

We haven't had a morning yet that was over -11, so if they are not froze over yet-they should be soon. It was a balmy -28 Thursday morning up here!! If I hear anything, I'll let you know.

The report for Birch Creek in the Riverdale Sportsmen's said something to the affect of: "Cold, go somewhere else" when I was in there on Saturday.

It HAD some good tigers in it. After that piece aired, the poor little pond had anglers completely surrounding it. The fishing went south after that. There may still be some good ones though.

Also, there was a huge algae bloom on it this fall. If there isn't a good supply of fresh oxygen into that place, it may see at least a partial winter kill.
