Teaching kids how to fish
#1
Hello everyone, I've heard a lot about this site, so I checked it out today and decided to sign up. I was supprised to see that there were not any posts about the DWR Youth Fishing Clubs that are held each spring. It is a wonderful 8-week (meets 8 times)program with a planned lesson every evening and a fish-fry on the last night. The program is ran on volunteer power. I first got involved during the spring of 2003, it was a blast...it still is. To see the expression on a kid's face when they reel in their first fish EVER is priceless. I encourage all of you true anglers to chect out the program and share your knowledge with children. Drew Cushing from the DWR runs the program. Give him a call at (801) 538-4774 or e-mail him at andrewcushing@utah.gov you wont regret it.

Welcome to the site FishingCoach, and thanks for the great information about the teaching kids how to fish. I feel it would be worth while to help out. So let me know what I can do.

Thanks for the welcome Maddawg. All you have to do is contact Drew Cushing at the DWR (e-mail & number on previous post) and he will let you know which club is closest to where you live. Your volunteer hours also count for the dedicated hunter program. There are clubs from Logan to Salem.

Welcome FishingCoach.
I have made posts about the DWR fishing clubs in the past. The problem is that these pages have such a fast turn over that it doesn't stay up very long. I will be posting on the Events and Get togethers thread in a month or so inlisting volunteers to help teach our kids in the Roy area. We will have our new urban pond opening this spring and the fishing club kids will be the first ones to use it, as our grand opening.
It's good to see you join us and we look forward to hearing about your fishing trips in the future. DKS

Thanks for the welcome fuzzyfisher (Ron). I know the clubs don't start for a couple months but the DWR is looking for and signing up volunteers now. Volunteer training is going to be some time in Feb. I just want to make more people aware of this program because I think it's wonderful. "Get kid's hooked on fishing, not drugs"

Thanks for the welcome DKSRenegade. I think that it's great that there is a new urban fishery opening in Roy. And even better that there is going to be a kid's club in Roy. Have you been involved with ony of the clubs in the past?

Welcome to the site fishingcoach. Teaching kids is always a good thing to bring up. I think once you are on the board for a while you will see many of the members are involved with teaching kids in one way or another. Some through taking scouts, their own children(which is the place to start) and grandkids. If you look on the events page you will see that we are having a get together at rockport on the 15th which has been combined with the kids fishing day to teach and enjoy them. Thanks again for informing us on the training required to help with teaching the kids. We will look forward to you posts and even if some of us don't sign up I'm sure many of us will be willing to help those that are teaching. I know that those on this site belive that our future is in our kids for fishing and hunting.

FishingCoach,

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about the DWR Youth Fishing Club. I have been a volunteer for the club in Orem since 2002 and like you said it still is a blast. I've been pretty much the coordinator for the Orem area which means I'm in charge of all the gear and tackle and work closely with Orem Recreation Center representative. I called and left a message for Drew Cushing today and told him that I'll be doing it again in 2005. I'm looking forward to this coming season.

Kastmaster,
I commend you on your commitment to this program. The coordinators are the driving force that make these clubs run smoothly. From reading some of the other posts, i'm not the only one that thinks this is the best thing since the invention of the hook. I'd like to keep this post going so that more people can find out what they are missing.

Have you (or anyone else) ever checked out www.utahfishfinder.com? When I first moved here in 2001, that was my "in" for where to fish first. The information isn't as up to date as BFT.com but is still useful.

Happy New Year!

Tube , give us a reminder to listen in on the radio program when it is about time . I usually listen but sometimes get busy and forget . Wouldn't want to miss you on there if I am in area where I can . I assume it is KSL 1160 .

Tubedude,

The radio program couldnt have picked a better represenative of BFT then the mighty T-I-O. I'm sure you will do a stand out job. Next thing you know you'll have your own weekly TV show , aka Doug Miller from a tube.[Wink]

This sounds like a great program!! What is the commitment that I need to make?

As I read through the discussions about helping kids in this program, I noticed there are a lot of people saying what a great idea it is but very few who are willing to take the time to actually help out. What is the deal?

Great ideas. I've used the HOOKED ON FISHING - NOT ON DRUGS program here at the junior high where I teach with an "Outdoors Club" I've put together. So many of these kids just need something to be interested in other than the crap that's out there. Plus I think you learn a lot yourself, just from listening to what you have to say. We'll not lose many kids if we just show interest in them, and share what we know about fishing, and life ...

Halfling,
I talked with Drew Cushing today and he e-mailed me something to post that may answer your question.

Volunteers Needed to Teach Kids How to Fish

Salt Lake City -- Adult volunteers are needed to teach six- to 13-year-olds about fish and fishing in communities stretching from Logan to Salem. Volunteers will be helping the Division of Wildlife Resources and the communities with their community fishing program.
Youth fishing clubs have been established in Logan, Brigham City, Ogden, Roy, Clinton, Clearfield, Farmington, Bountiful, Murray, South Jordan, Orem, Spanish Fork and Salem in 2005, and each club needs volunteers to help.
Volunteer training will be held in each community in February. The training takes about one evening to complete. The clubs of about 40 to 80 children each will be formed by April and will meet for about eight weeks.
To volunteer, or for more information, call Andrew Cushing, community fisheries biologist for the DWR, at (801) 538-4774 or send an e-mail to him at andrewcushing@utah.gov
 Anyone Can Help

While patience and good communication and teaching skills are needed, Cushing says adults don’t need a lot of fishing experience to volunteer. “After training, regardless of the person’s fishing skills, I’m sure they’ll feel completely comfortable getting together with their youth fishing club,” he said.
After training, volunteers will spend about two hours once a week, through the spring and/or summer, teaching children about fish and fishing by fishing with them at a local water.
Cushing says many rewards await those who volunteer. “When they see the look on a kid’s face, the first time they catch a fish, it’ll probably make their whole summer,” he said.
Youth Fishing Clubs Growing in Popularity

“2004 was our most successful year yet,” Cushing said. “About 1,700 children and 250 adult volunteers participated. Many of the volunteers were people who have helped before. They’ve seen the positive influence they’ve had on these kids and the difference they’re making in their lives.”
Cushing says communities are starting to offer fishing as a sport in their city recreation departments, and that’s the main reason for the clubs’ increased success. “For the first time, fishing has found its way into mainstream sports, right along with soccer, baseball and football,” he said.
Cushing says the popularity of the clubs has led to some challenges. “The number of kids who can participate is tied directly to the number of adults who volunteer to help,” he said. “If we don’t get enough volunteers, some of the kids who want to participate won’t be able to this year.”
