Where to take the kids?
#1
My wife is leaving town on Thursday morning, so I'm heading out with the kids (ages 3, 5, 7). We've fished Scofield and the Strawberry this winter, but haven't been out for a few weeks.

Where's the best place to take kids right now? I'd like them to experience some perchies, but it sounds like the ice at Rockport is a bit scary. Strawberry sounds pretty slushy. I haven't heard anything about Scofield lately.

I'm in Utah county and would prefer to keep the trip to within a couple of hours. Any suggestions?

Fishmonkey,
Strawberry today was excellent. The slush is all frozen and walking is a breeze. Easy access with snowmobiles, wheelers, or walking.

I've been thinking of hitting Rockport Thursday with my kids 10, 8, 5. I'm hoping that it will get cold enough to freeze the water on top of the ice Wednesday night. Let me know if you are coming up to Rockport.

MY DAUGHTER, HER FRIEND & MYSELF HIT ROCKPORT YESTERDAY ABOUT 11:30. BY 3:30 WE WERE LIMITED OUT WITH NICE PERCH, SMALLEST WAS ABOUT 8" & BIGGEST ABOUT 9 1/2 TO 10". WE WERE FISHING ABOUT 200 YD. OUT FROM THE BOAT RAMP & A LITTLE SOUTH. ICE WAS RIGHT AT 4 1/2" THICK WITH THE TOP INCH OR SO KINDA SLUSHY. THE TOP WAS HARD WHEN WE STARTED BUT BY BHT TIME WE QUIT IT WAS GETTING PRETTY PUNKY. ACCESS TO THE ICE WAS NO SWEAT OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOAT RAMP. IF WE DON'T GET SOME COLDER NIGHTS IN THE NEXT WHILE, THE PLACE MIGHT GO TO POT.

UPSHOT OF ALL THIS IS, I THINK ROCKPORT WOULD BE A GOOD SHOT. THE FISH ARE RIGHT ON THE BOTTOM, MAYBE UP A FOOT & THEY REALLY BITE LIGHT. SEEMS LIKE THEY WOULD HIT ALMOST ANYTHING. WE CAUGHT ALMOST ALL OURS WITH A LITTLE JIG TIPPED WITH A JUMBO MEALWORM. LET IT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM, PICK IT UP 6" TO A FOOT & BE READY. THEY'LL HIT IT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. IF YOU MISS THE FIRST BITE, PULL IT UP 4 OR 5 FEET, LET IT BACK TO THE BOTTOM & WATCH OUT. THEY'LL ONLY HIT ONCE OR TWICE WHEN YOU PICK IT UP OFF THE BOTTOM SO IF YOU MISS THOSE BITES, PULL IT UP AGAIN.

HOPE WHEREVER YOU GO YOU HAVE A BLAST.

Thanks for the Thursday offer. It looks like I'll be heading out on Friday (and possibly Saturday, depending on how the kids are). I'll probably head to either Rockport of the Berry, depending on what the reports look like tomorrow.

[Wink]Hey a little trick I use at Rockport is fillet on side of the first perch you catch, then cut that fillet into small 1/8" by 1/2" long pieces with the skin still attatched, run the jig hook thru the skin, then do everything they are telling you to do there. The bait will stay on for about 10 perch somtimes more. Saves alot of time rebaiting. and it will keep you really busy with the kids taking their fish off. and not having to rebait every single time. good luck. give us a report on where you went and how it worked for ya.
