I'll be the first to admit that although I ice fish at night quite often during a season, I rarely catch Perch at night. I've always felt being a feed base they head for cover once the big guns start prowling.. I will add that because of that belief when fishing waters containing perch I like to go to perch parterns and hug the bottom once the sun drops for best results..

Perch are considered daylight biters, and not nocturnal feeders at all. Crappie, trout and many other species are night biters, but not perch.

I have never caught perch at night, even when you can see them laying there on the bottom. Walleye you catch at night. Crappie love the night if you direct a flood light into the water. Trout will feed at night, monstor browns are known to prefer night feeding. We used to have fishing houses on Lake Champlain when I was growing up that families literally lived in. Perch always stopped feeding at dusk. But then the walleye come out.

The reason you don't cach many perch at night is becouse the are site feeders and have poor vision at low light conditions thats why walleyes target them so much and you notice the bite shuting of when the sun drops they don't use there sense of smell very much at all and relly almost totally on vision to find there food unless you drop a meal right on there nose they won't take it because they can't see it very good and can't smell as good as some other game fish

I got luck once last year on perch and hooked a few about 6:00am this time of year at rockport but I tried that this last weekend and got zero perch until the sun started lighting up the sky . I think it is better in the daylight for them .

Years ago when Hyrum was full of perch we took lanterns out and caught a bunch of them. We used glow jig heads and would put them next to the lantern for about 10 seconds then bait up and drop it down the hole. The action was non stop. (Just be careful of touching you line on the top of the lantern, burns right through.) I agree, this technique is deadly on crappies.

I fish for perch at night on Roberts Gravel Pond in Idaho. The water is only 8 feet deep. I use very small flies like a size 16 or 18 bead head pheasant tail nymph. In shallow water it does not take long for the fly to get to the bottom. I also use really light line because this is a finness tequnique. I find a very small meal worm to tip the nymph with.
Good Luck

gn2mtns, Both outings were in the narrows. He said he drilled his hole right next to my hole from last weekend. Maybe its a lucky spot or somthin.. Not much in the way of successful reports lately.. Access is a little tricky in the spot we fished, so plan on a long walk or a steep hike, one of the two..
wh2, I only caught three last weekend and two of em were smaller fish and one was average size. My friend said he caught (last night) a mixed bag of sizes and nothing huge.. Still fun though..

PERCH SLEEP AT NIGHT. THEY MOST TIMES WILL SIDLE UP TO A BUSH OR ROCK AND SET RIGHT TIGHT TO THE BOTTOM. THAT WHY WALLEYES FEED ON PERCH AT NIGHT. WHY CHASE A MEAL IF YOU CAN WAIT TILL NIGHT AND JUST PICK IT UP.. IN SUMMER ON DC WE FISH NIGHT ALOT FOR EYES WE CAST LARGE STICK BAITS AT WEEDS AND TWITCH THEM BACK LIKE INJURED PERCH JUST RUDELY AWAIKEND.
