The west coast of Rockport
#1
I am planning on taking some guys from work. I have fished the west side of the lake and want to go there. I have heard that it is hard to get on the ice without a plank. Do you need one on the west coast of the lake?

If you have a plank, take it. The ice at the shore line in recessing as the water rises. You may have a few feet of open water at the shore line. The East side is the same way.

I fished the south west side just off the highway yesterday afternoon, and the ice was good and sturdy all the way up to the shoreline with no open water.

I was there yesterday (2 Feb), and we had not trouble getting on the ice (at 7:30 a.m.) or off (at 2:15 p.m.). The lake was frozen solid right up to the edge. The planks that people had left before were frozen (embedded) in the ice, so I guess it must have been warmer and softer earlier in the week. When we arrived in the morning, the temperature was about 15 degrees, so the ice was solid.

We got on the ice just before 08:00 and left about 12:30. We accessed the ice on the west side of the lake, between the first and second outhouses last Saturday and had no need for a plank. It was a little soft in some spots, as I wandered around, but all in all it was perfectly safe. 5" of ice where we fished. The worst part of the whole trip was the muddy trial climbing back to the vehicles, but that was no big deal, my buddy was driving. [Wink]
