Is May a good time to be at FG for Lake Trout?
Where are they usually at that time? Up in the Wyoming side?
I'm trying to figure out where to go for my vacation planned the week of May 8th and would appreciate any help you can give me.

Hey Eric-
I fish the Gorge for macks hard every year. I have been doing it for about 15 years and have had some great success. In my book, April, May and June are the very best times of the year. I don't fish the north part of the lake but if you launch from the Lucerne boat ramp, you have access to fishing up the canyon, Antelope Flats and Swim Beach, all of which can be fantastic in May. These locations are on the southern section of the lake.

Thanks for the information.
I spent two weeks two years ago fishing out the Lucerne area and caught my biggest mac ever. It went 28 lbs. Most fun I've ever had in freshwater.
Now I did catch it and others jigging a spoon.
Is May a more of a tube bite, spoon, or a trolling bite?
Will they be shallow or at the 80 - 100 foot range I found them before?

All I do is verticle jig. We create some of our own baits. I haven't used a jigging spoon for years. The macks are schooled on them. The fish will likely be 80 - 100 feet. It depends on the lake level. They tend to school at the same place during the the same time of year, from year to year. They are quite sensitive to pressue too. Try to get out during the week as opposed to weekends. Depending on the time of year they move from location to location too.

You will find fish in May in the same general areas you found them in July. Sometimes a little shallower, but not always.

There are some great spots up the canyon where you can find good numbers of catchable fish in the early part of the year....April & May but you won't find them there after the middle to end of May. Yes, you can find macks in Linwwod Bay and Antelope or some of the other "popular" spots in the spring as well as in July. The later in the year you go, the moodier and more difficult to catch the fish in these places get. Starting in July, the fish will start to congregate in Linwood Bay to stage for the spawn in October and November. You can find these fish stacked like cord wood during mid-summer but they are very difficult to catch. At certain times of the year, there are different locations that have fish and at different times of the year those same locations won't. It is important to find the structure or "humps" that hold fish. These humps can be fairly small and isolated and if you are just a little off you may as well be fishing in a soup can. Study the lake and figure out where they are at certain times of the year. Bottom line...if you want to consistantly catch fish all year long, find the locations where these fish are during that time of the year. You will be much more successful. I have kept a log for about fifteen years and that helps to find the location you want. The fun and challange of mack fishing at the Gorge is to find where they are and come up with new baits that they haven't seen. It gets tons of pressure and your fishing success will depend on location and presentation.

you cant just come up here once or twice a yr and catch them all .these mac are very easy to catch if you pay your due's.and it is very funny how every one will tell you april,may and june are the best time's of the yr give me jan feb march and Iam good and the tourist's arent around yet. I will find fish deeper in may -sep100-120 and shallower in the winter and early spring35-93ft the reason thay go deep is there is to much boat buzz ya there will be fish in the same spot's as you are all talking but I feel and this is not new to me these fish get pressed so hard that thay head for deep as you all can tell by my typeing iam no scholer but I live with these mac I fish the gorge more than eny one and I will hold to that i fish for these pig's for more than 200day's a yr so I feel I know what Iam blabing about.fishing is very good at this time yesterday I nailed 9mac from 23lb-36lb was the biggest just good health fish no real pig's.Last week I realeased a 47lber that I should have stuffed oh well hope I can get him when he is 50+.good fishing...........

I say give this man the respect he deserves!! Who can argue with anyone who can haul in 9 macs that big in a single day, any time of year, in any manner. And 200 days a year, that is certainly paying your dues! Hopefully someday, after paying my own dues, I can haul in a 47 lber and have the guts to put him back!!!!!!!!!!

Judd I will get your jig's as soon I come back to work.
