boat tune-up

Ok, my boat didn't get out at all last year. I think I started it once for a couple of minutes in the driveway with the garden hose hooked up to push water through, but I don't dare run it long that way as it isn't good for the motor.

Anyway, I'm sure it could use a good tuneup before the season this year. It is a '73 135 HP Evinrude OB (2 cycle). I would like to get a general tuneup, possibly a carb job and maybe a new impellar (have no idea if or when that was ever replaced).

Can anyone recommend someone that would do a good job for a good price. I would offer trade, but I don't have much I could trade so I'll probably have to pay $$. Smile Offering a fishing trip or two as trade to a boat mechanic doesn't do much good since they probably already have their boat.

Anyway, contact me if you or someone you know can do a good job and would like the work.

I do my own and my motor has points a little more to do then you would have to do. plugs regaped and make sure your rotor and cap are good, same with the wires and maybe timeing if that. I have always done my own tune ups on cars and everything. I am not a mechanic. but one question why a carb job? you may just need to run some berrymans b12 chemtool in your gas to get rid of any build up. well just my 2 cents

I can take care of all that for you, I charge $70 labor for the carb kit install and $50 labor for the water pump.
Go get all the parts (carb kit and water pump and spark plugs) and bring it by here for a weekend and I'll take care of it.
I live in sugarhouse if it sounds fair to you.

My big concern is that I didn't fog the engine or purge the carb before it was parked. I'm afraid the carb may be 'varnished' a bit, or have the left-over oil built up in it (2 cycle oil after the gas evaporates). Most carb cleaners and chemicals that are run through while the engine is running are very hard on 2 cycle engines as they don't have the proper lubricant in them to keep the engine lubricated.
Although this is an older motor I really want things done right so it will last much longer. If it doesn't I'll be down to using the old rowboat again. Not a good thing for Strawberry.
I also really want to get an opinion on the impellar from someone that knows what they are doing. I really don't know much about them, just that I would think the water output would be a bit stronger than I'm seeing. I would hate to have that one little part go out and ruin my whole engine. That is probably my biggest concern is the impellar. The rest is just to make sure it is running as well as possible for a 30+ year old boat.

Sounds like a good deal. Where would be best to pick up the impellar parts? Do I need any new gaskets or anything for the lower end to do that?

go to marine products and take the serial # off the motor when you go so that they can look up the exact parts.
also if you buy the water pump instead of just the impellor you get a new design housing and its only a few dollars more.
theres also a wear plate that goes on the pump there thats only a couple bucks that should get replaced.
those guys at marine products are pretty good at taking care of ya.
