Lincoln Beach Report 2-26-05
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Mikecromaine, Out4Trout, Alan, CBR and my own self did a dawn launch on Utah Lake at Lincoln Beach this morning. Shoulda stood in bed. Nice morning, water like glass, but the water was murky from the several days of north wind. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water temps are getting into the walleye "whoopie" range. Water was 42 at launch and 45 when O4T and I left about noon. A few more days of warm weather, and another few degrees in the water and things should get better quicker.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Saw several walleye caught right at the mouth of the first spring, along with a couple of small channel cats. The walleyes were taken on plastic and the cats on cut bait. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Our group served up just about every kind of lure and bait ever found to entice walleyes or white bass, with very little success. We all had tentative hits, and a couple of us had fish on briefly. Well, actually, I DID catch a couple of carp. The first was only about a pound, and slurped in the little glider jig I was casting for whities. Fun on the light rod. The second was about 3#, also on light tackle, and I hooked him right in the nostril. First time I ever had a fish try to snort a jig. I invited both carplets home to rest awhile in my freezer. I plan to return them to Utah Lake later, when the water is warmer, and introduce them to my friends the channel cats.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]With the exception of a couple of fish caught by the two "locals" who are always down there (small walleye and small cat), nobody else in the area took any fish at all. There were several boats, our motley group, a couple of other tubers and a YAK. That guy paddled out, eased over an anchor, chucked out a bait on a big surf rod and then sat there reading for the next two hours...with no interruptions.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I marked quite a few fish on my sonar, mostly suspended at mid depth in about 6 or 7 feet of water. Later, while moving back toward the car, I also saw a couple of large groups of fish from the bottom to middepth, but they all had lockjaw. Maybe we can also blame it on the full moon. Works for me.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The launch ramp was clean and open. According to CBR and Mikecromaine, who launched their toons at the ramp, there is at least 2-3 feet of water all the way out from the launch area.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I thought I saw Walleyebob in his boat, just off the springs, when we first got there. However, he hauled down to one of his areas farther west before we could get out for a chat. Saw that boat power over to the west side later. Didn't see any boats working around Bird Island.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Sorry I didn't get any pics of Mike's tricked out toon. We set it up for the rod holders and sonar last Wednesday, and I "donated" an old fibreglass antenna rod I had in my garage. Mike converted it to a flagpole and has a skull and crossbones pirate flag flying from it. The words on the flag are "Fish or cut bait"...or something like that.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Out4Trout is still looking to score his first walleye. He is really good on hooksets now. Hooks the heck out of those rocks. I had to make him leave them all there though, because I just know he would want me to fillet them for him. Mike stretched his string on a few rocks today too. Both those guys were newly spooled up with Excalibur. I think they were impressed with how tough it is. At least I think they got most of their jigs back. On one of them, O4T commented that he had straightened his hook but the line held...on 6#.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]FUN FUN FUN. Ya can't beat fun. It was good getting back out on the water, even if the fish didn't read the script and bite when they were supposed to.[/#0000ff]

[cool]Today was good times, even if the catching wasn't fast and furious, like it soon will be! I definitely am a believer in that Excaliber Silver Thread line. That stuff works like a champ! Now, if I could just talk a Walleye into testing out the stuff, I'll be set.

As was mentioned, the weather was great, although I think I'm going to get one size larger boots so during this time of year I can wear even one more pair of socks. As always, it was great fishing with T.I.O.-The Infamous One, and thanks for the lift to, Pat. Now that Mike has a pontoon, you never see his ugly mug anymore. He's out cruising the whole dang lake in that thing! Good fishin' with the tubemeister, Mike, Craig, and Al, even though we didn't see much of Al. Let's do that again soon! They said on the weather tonight that next weekend should be in the mid 50's and maybe even reach 60 at some spots in Northern Utah!

What to add to that , ummm , Well we fished all over the place down there with no fish for me. and I threw tossed kicked every type color flavor except a dupont spinner. cbr landed a small mudder later after pat and geoff left. I didn't lose a lure or jig today not because I didn't get enough snags. It sure was nice to out there again I just wish someone would have told those fish they were not doing there job. Well next time we wil rip them a new one.
Oh excalaber line kicks bass it is so strong and cast like a champ. Thanks for the advice on the line pat. I am sold after today

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you found some fish. I wondered if maybe there might be a better bite later in the day, after the water warms a bit. Also, that area can be pretty productive. I know that some of the rocky points down there are just swarming with walleyes during the spawn. I have seen bunches of fish rolling in there after dark, when they are spawning.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Thanks for the friendly invitation, but I can't make it tomorrow. You keep them warmed up for me and I will probably be down again next weekend.[/#0000ff]

The weather couldn't have been better, the fishing was excellent, company was great but the catching sucked.

Picked up a small mud cat but let him go, small ugly thing.

I am thinking Jordanelle needs a float next, anyone crazy enough to join me? Smile

[cool][#0000ff]Hey man, you know I got snowballs. You have seen me tubin' big J when there was snow on the ground, ice around the buoys and it was so foggy you couldn't see the shore when you were 50 feet away. [/#0000ff][#0000ff]Are you thinkin' Saturday? [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have been hearing the call too. I am betting the perch will be in closer now and that there should be a good chance of some decent trout. Still a long ways from shoreline smallies though. They are still out in deep water with their winter parkas on.[/#0000ff]

I was toying with the idea of tooning willard next saturday. My wife gave me the day off, so if I don't have to work overtime, I'll be good to go. I might be able to be persuaded to hit Jordanelle instead though.

I have some red antifreeze brewing right now[Wink]. After that, I'll make up some irish antifreeze.

TD , I bet there is still some snow up there next saturday and some ice to chill your beverages . It was 3 to 4' deep last weekend . Here is some pics from last few weeks up there ice fishing . Been hooking small perch , browns , bows and a cutt . No bass or eyes but have been trying to find them . Been nice having the ice to myself . Sure hate to see it go .

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Randy, thanks for the great pics. Kent told me about your SECRET spot, but I figured that you would post it if you wanted.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I'll bet you have some company now that "Rocky" is deteriorating.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]ME? I think I will wait a week or two before hitting it with a tube. I usually launch at the PWC ramp, but not if I have to have an ice auger to get into the water. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It won't be long until Jordanelle is open, and there are plenty of lowland waters available. Heck, I may even trudge down to Yuba for an exploratory.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Thanks again for the update and the pics.[/#0000ff]

I am thinking I need to give Jordanelle a couple more weeks to thaw. Willard sounds promising, maybe?

You won't need an auger to launch from the PWC ramp at Jordanelle. There is no ice at all in that area of the reservoir.

[green][size 2]Damn, my boat won't float on that. It might break the trolling motor.

[cool][#0000ff]Willard is a definite possibility. There are wipers being taken there right now with a TOP SECRET method that is ideal for tooners and tubers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have also heard tell of some walleyes and even a few of those small channels on bait...crawlers and cut bait.[/#0000ff]

I went to willard yesterday to see what the launching conditions would be like for my tube or toon. The southwest corner has a "driveway", with no boulders. You'd still have to carry your stuff over the dike, since there's a gate across the roadway, but at least there's not much danger of breaking legs or necks. I'm debating whether or not it'd be worth carrying the battery and motor. Oars are much lighter.

I just got my kitchen pass for Willard on Saturday. Is the south marina open for launching to say my toon. How do you get to the road that leads on to the dike. I want to use my toon on willard. Now if I had to I guess I could bring my boat and use it as a transport like we are going to do at powell this April. Would be a good time for a test run and get the boat out of dry dock.
