Diamond Fork on the Fly
#1
This good weather has got me itching to get my fly rod out and catch some brown, cuts and bows. One of my favorite streams is the Diamond Fork. Has anyone been there lately? How is the flow and is there any snow left? Are there any streams fishing good this time of year. I appreciate any info from fellow BFT fish dudes.

Diamond Fork usually fishes pretty good about now but throw down your buggy whip and fish with some bigger spinners or any type of soft plastic minnows and the big ol browns and cutts will come out and smack em. The bows and cutts should be getting ready to spawn up there, where the browns haven't cleaned em out anyway and so if you find the right hole/s you can get some big fish in just a few casts. Just kidding about your buggy whip....if thats your addiction, thats cool but I would probably throw some streamers or buggers for the bigger fish. I spose you could do ok on some sort of nymphs (dark), for the average 12-15 inch fish in there. I don't know much about fur n feathers but I'm sure there are some that can ring in or PM you details. I used to fish that river constantly when I lived in Provo and gold spinners and soft plastics always worked wonders for me all year round, especially if you went into the construction areas.... oh geez, did I say that out loud?? [pirate] But anyway, now is the time while its still too cold for fair weather fishermen but early enough that you don't get horrible conditions due to runoff or irrigation water... course, with the project done, irrigation won't really ruin the fishing the way it used to. Good luck to you, get pics and post em if you can.

Hey chinook I've only been once to Diamond Fork, and it was a long time ago. Do you fish it often? I'm moving to Payson this week and I plan on hitting it a few times this year with spinning and fly fishing gear. I could use a few pointers myself.

I have been fishing the Diamond Fork for over 18 years now and there are fish from the Spanish Fork Highway all the way to 3 forks. Even above 3 forks there are good numbers of brown trout. Nymphs have always been good on Diamond with the occasional dry fly hatches. In the olden days, before the diversion project, I have caught 40 plus fish in one afternoon. It is just a real nice river with lots of access and not too hard to fish. Give it a try some time and try an attracter with a dropper on it for the fish that want to stay down. You should have some success.

Thanks for the tip. Do you know approx. where it crosses the Spanish Fork Highway?

You only go a couple of miles up Spanish Fork canyon and you will come to a sign that says Diamond Fork. You turn left and basically find a nice piece of water to fish.

The sign out on the highway, pointing to left, used to be marked PALMYRA CAMPGROUND. Maybe it still is ...

Oh yeah hello! DUH! I was for some weird reason thinking that it connected to Spanish Fork River somewhere in town. I know where the turnoff is. Thanks again.

[Smile]Hey chinook I am itching to go up there also. I may try to run up on Thursday after work. I caught a lot of nice fish last spring on my flyrod, I used a FULL sinking line and believe it or not I only used 2-3 feet of leader, I wanted to get my fly down to the bottom. I used streamers and woolybuggers but the best fly for me was a black #6 woolybugger with a bunch of red and silver krystal flash tied in on the tail, this extra flash seemed to help in the murky water. Maybe we'll run into each other, goodluck if you go![Smile]

I fished it Saturday. It was "decent". Not fast and furious by any means and the water was a little higher and off color (I suppose due to the runoff in feeder streams). No hatches to speak of except for a decent midge hatch the fish ignored.

We caught them on various small (#22-#24) midges on the bottom as well some bigger stonefly nymphs and bloodworm patterns.
