Here are some more pics, including one of those weird fish I caught once while blue gill fishing. This should give some folks something to talk about trying to figure out what it is.... [cool]

All the fish like that one that I caught were about that size...fat little suckers too. And a real pretty light blue.... You can't really see in that picture but they were pretty little fish... I could totally see them being in an aquarium.

Howdy!
Them are some nice looking fish. Congratulations on getting them!
I have a new guess about what that fish is. It is some species of Cichlasoma, or Convicts. I don't know the exact species. But due to its plumness and shape of head I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Tilapia don't get rounded heads like that(ordinarily).
Plus thier a very popular aquarium fish. You probly had some puke scuba diver go out there and take his aquarium fish with him. Unfortunatly for the bass and bluegill this species is extremely aggressive. They've been known to take on Oscar's 3 times their own size.

[unimpressed]Not sure why you felt the need to stereo type divers the way you did. Being a scuba diver isn't a prerequsite to releasing a fish into a body of water. In fact, it would actually be more difficult for a diver to use his equipment to release the fish rather than just dumping the fish in the water.

Somebody sure is sensitive. He didn't say all scuba divers are pukes. All he said is some puke that was also a scuba diver could have done that. Too thin skinned.

Thank you for your assesment of my sensativity level[sly]. I was simply pointing out how silly this scuba diver theory sounds. But thank you for your kind remarks.[ ]

About posting pictures, my pleasure. I sure had fun getting them.... [ ]. I'm always happy to share, sometimes it just takes a while for the development and posting to take place. Hopefully I'll have more now that I found out about Wallyworld and how much quicker it is to get film developed and put on a cd for me. Glad all of the 400 some odd people who have looked at em got a chance to....

Wow. Um, where to begin...
Not all scuba divers are scum bags. Totally the opposite, mon frere. I'd be willing to say 75% of them are very decent people like you or I. Just like only 75% of fishermen are decent people. And that figure's probly lower.
Secondly, they frequent those ponds a whole lot more than fisherman, sight seer's, ect. There fore it is most likely one of them that took the fish out there to begin with.
Thirdly, the pond that these fish are being found in are hard to dive. So they probly had their "beloved" pet fish that they were sick of in a 5 gallon bucket and tossed them in. Thats what I originally ment. They were going out there to dive and took their fish with them. Then they chucked them into the water.
I'm sorry that you took that the wrong way. But if it were your favorite body of water that somebody had planted an extremely agressive fish in you'd be pissed to. Try to see how I feel. I've fished out there for 16 years now. And now some puke decides to plant tropical fish in there? That is complete and total B.S.

I still think that the convict is just a little more probable than the tilapia. Just the shape of the head alone is enough for me. The tilapia's snout is just too sharp. Also, your picture is of a juvenille. That fish is full grown. Plus there are a few species in this genus, too. Take a look at my picture. I think its quite a bit closer on the fin shape and snout shape. The coloration of the fish caught at blue lakes can also differ due to different water PH, coloration, diet, ect.

HeyMc_Lennon, take a bredth brother. None of us like the bucket bios. But they are here and we should focus our efforts and frustration on them not each other. Was reading about some of the things caught in the DWRs gill nets. Want to really get yer fathers ruffled? Check this out; gold fish, koi, Oscars (now theres a real friendly sort and they get BIG), loach, piranha (ewww lets go swimming), black bullheads, painted turtles, and the list goes on my friend. Best we can do is turn them in if we catch them doing it. I don't think any us would do anything like that knowing what we do. But there are people out there that haven't a clue. So lets spread the word, ask pet shops who sell these critters to post signs and pass out lititure explaining why this can be so harmful. Just my 2 cents.

[black]Do you realize how silly that last post sounds? I think you're reaching to some far fetched conclusions with absolutely no proof to substantiate your claims. It could of been anyone. To say it was a scuba diver or a fisherman or a skier, or county road worker with absolutely no facts behind your conclusions is irresponsible.[/black]
[black] [/black]
[black]I can understand your emotional reaction to this situation and the possibility that the pond was illegally planted with a non native species but to lash out blindly at a particular group of people because they too use the same pond you and other fishermen use, is carrying it a little too far don't you think?[/black]

I'm not saying it wasn't planted illegally, but it looks more like a crappie to me than one of those other fish.
I don't know for sure and I am more than willing to admit when I'm wrong but maybe the simplest solution is the correct one.

You know, I will say this for the fish. I don't care what they were, they were bigger than most of the gills in that pond and they fight as hard if not harder than the stunted bluegill. It was a lot of fun and I apologize for causing such a ruckus. IMHO, the divers out there are pretty considerate of their fishing bretheren but when Leaky and I were out there, they could see us fishing as shallow as we could still being into fish and they swam right into his fishing area. They were doing some sort of navigation thing but seriously, there was no reason they couldn't do it on the other side of the pond away from where Leaky was fishing. Then they come out with their loud music and are just really obnoxious, especially the one dive shop that pulls out there with a Maroon box trailer.... I mean, a lot of the people were out there were beginners certifying but its like once the divers are on the water, then the pond is theirs and I don't agree with that. Now, about divers dumping fish, I do agree that it may have been other people, once upon a time, but I would say that just based on numbers of people that go out there and who I've seen out there every time I've gone, unless the Air Force is taking up bucket biology...... There just aren't that many people who drive all the way out just to get rid of fish and with the ponds being right by the road..... divers would just naturally be my first guess too. Doesn't mean I condone or reproach the actions taken to get the fish out there....that doesn't matter because evidently they haven't hurt the fishery too badly.... (see pics), but if a finger was pointed, I'd have to say the probability factor would swing it directly at the guys in swim fins and dive/snorkel gear. Regardless of who did or didn't, the fish are there and evidently there to stay. It was sure fun catching the fat little buggers, just for a change of pace, and they are really pretty... now I just need to get some big enough to eat. [ ] Or maybe take the "unnatural" fish home for my own aquarium. Anyway, thanks for all the opinions on the fish.... I still have no idea what they are but it was fun to look at all the guesses. So, where do we go from here?? Probably back out to the lake for some more good fishing.
