Kolob flies + Panfish
#1
I am getting into fly tying, especially for Kolob. Could anybody tell me what flies to tie a lot of? And, if it isn't too much, I would like to compile a repetoire, if you will, of flies to use there. If anyone would like to share, I would be interested to know, of course as best as you can remember, any (or even every) fly anyone can remember catching a fish on at Kolob, what time of day, and the time of year. Nevertheless, if nobody wants to share their greatest secrets, or any at all, that is surely understandable. I just wanted to get a good headstart this year. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
PS - anyone know any good panfish flies for either Sand Hollow or Quail? I'd appreciate it.

I can't think of any fly that doesn't work at Kolob. I'd start by tying some of your personal favorites then try some other patterns.

Try a wooley bugger in olive green, black, or brown color with a full sinking line. Tie only 5' of tipit to the fly line. Any longer and the streamer doesn't swim naturally. Fish at several different depths until you locate the fish. Strip the line back in with short pulls several times and then pause and repeat. Be ready for a strike at the pause as the fish like to strike as the fly is going down. Also try leach patterns with the same technique. Use smaller sizes for pan fish. Good luck and have fun.

For the panfish I love tying little topwater poppers. I have caught a ton of bluegill, Crappie, Small and Largemouth bass with some simple little hand tied poppers. You can use deer hair or buy foam for the heads and it is like dry fly fishing except the fish attack the topwater and then hold on.

Try some beadheads for your wooley buggers, I like black and Gold.

For Sunfish I like small Black wooly buggers with rubber legs, Beadhead and extra lead wrapped behind the bead (i.e a Jig)

Black ants and foam spiders are also on my favorite sunfish pattern list.

Also tie some midge larva for Kolob, Red with a clear bead bubble top, and good old Zebra midges. I caught a bunch sight fishing from the shore one day.

Good luck with your new hobby.

Kolob is north of the town of Virgin up the Kolob Ranch road about, I'd say maybe a half hour's drive, maybe a little more if you get behind a trailor. It has predominantly rainbows with a few cutthroats and I've heard rumors of brook trout, though I've never caught any there or heard of anybody who actually claims to have caught one there. If you go, plan on fishing for rainbows.

MTNman your right about brookies but I've only seen one caught since the last treatment. You forgot to add Golden Shiners, straight from Nevada, to that list.
