New Fish Finder
#1
Well it is my "berfday" today, and that would explain why I got a fish cat, but I wasn't expecting such a large present from my mother-in-law, and I have enough $$ to get a fish finder now (she must like me or something).

I have been looking around for few weeks "just in case" and I looked at Cuda Eagle 168, they are selling it at sporstsmans for $99.99, which seems to be cheaper than anywhere else I have looked. I am going to be putting it on my fish cat, and I am curious what everyone else uses on their toon/tube and if the Cuda 168 is a good one. What do all of you pro's use?

I am on Lowrance's Pro-Staff so I obviously use there product's and find them to be top notch ...but having said that I have also used the sister company to lowrance (Eagle's) product's and for the money I truly don't think that you can go wrong. They have alway's been reliable for me and that what's important when your out on the pond! Good luck with whatever you end up with and I'm sure you'll love whatever it is you end up with.

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Gibson, besides being a moderator on the Utah board, I am also a moderator on the Float Tubing board of BFT. Here's a link. [url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi?forum=81;"]FLOAT TUBING[/url] . If you open the "Best of the Best", at the top of the page, you can scroll down to find some links to past posts on sonar for tubing and tooning. You will note that there are several threads on the Cuda 168.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just to reassure you, I have been using the Cuda 168 on my tubes for over a year, and have been well pleased. I especially like the built in temp guage. You do not need to spend more for speed guage, unless you can kick a lot faster than I can. The only thing I would do differently is to spend few more dollars and buy the 168 EX, with the bigger screen.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The 168 mounts easily on the Outcast tubes. Attached are pics of how I have my display set up in the front drink pocket, and how I have the transducer mounted on a PVC shaft. I'll be happy to help you get it set up when you are ready.[/#0000ff]

Hey Pat,

That "Best of the Best" is impressive. I sure hope you won "Moderator of the week", or perhaps even "Moderator of the month, quarter...or whatever") for your ingenuity and hard work.

Well, that settles it, I am on my way to get the new Cuda 168. I appreciate your offer TubeDude, I'm sure I'll take you up on your offer, Emuscud has also offered to help with the setup. I'm excited to get everything going, I sure could have used the rod holder yesterday, my shoulders ache today because I had to hold my arms up so much above my pole(s) that I had to lay across my lap. Thanks everyone

[cool][#0000ff]No special awards. I guess they figure that they pay me enough and that I should be willing to do that for no additional payment (YEAH, RIGHT).[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I had given some thought to starting something like that for the Utah Board. We have special boards for some waters, for example, but there are a lot of other ones that newbies have to keep asking the same questions about. Same for different species, tackle, techniques, etc. One of the headings that would probably get a lot of play would be MAPS. We could display threads or actual links to maps for the different waters.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Just a thought. Glad you appreciate the effort I put in. It did take a lot of hours.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for those pics on finder installation! Most helpful. One quick question. Is that drink holder wide enough in diameter to hold a fishmark 320 monitor, which has mounting brackets on the side, instead of in the center, and a wider monitor? The total width of the monitor is about 2X the 168's width.

[cool][#0000ff]The drink holder is not holding the display itself, but a piece of 2" PVC Pipe, upon which I mounted the base plate and into which I stuffed the extra transducer wire (so I didn't have to cut and splice).[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I suspect that you could cut a piece of wood, plastic or almost anything to serve as the base mount, just big enough to stuff into the drink holder. Once you have the base plate mounted, you are good to go.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here's a bigger pic of the pocket mount arrangement. It is small in the other post. As you can see, the main idea is to get something that fits inside the pocket...snug but easy to get in and out.[/#0000ff]
