Rockport 3/26 Report
#1
Got to rockport about 8:30 a.m. and started trolling right of the bat. Went down by the dam to get out of the wind. Marked fish from 8 to 25 feet, so we started using the down riggers set at 12 feet. Caught fish right of the start. Around lunch time we went up by the inlet to try there for a bit. Didn't see many fish on the finder, trolled there for a little bit and then started back towards the dam. Got back by the dam and started to catch fish again. Fished till the sun went down and caught a total of 23 fish ranging from 9" to 18" and all rainbows. Other than the major sunburn on my FACE it was a great day on the pond and spent the day with a great friend. Thanks Jeremy!!!!

Thanks for the report D-ray, sounds like a great day on the pond. I've been thinking about taking my boat up there to do some trolling, any suggestions on what lures I should try? WH2

When it's hot - it's hot. I have fished at Rockport many times - trolling from my boat, casting from my 'toon, and even wading in the shallows by the inlet. There have been days there that anything a person put in the water would work, others times, even dynamite seemed like it wouldn't(like when the waterskiers put everything on the bottom and the fish won't take anything). But I can't remember ever getting completely skunked there. Of course, it seems that you are most likely to only catch planters or perch if stuck on the bank in some parts of Rockport.

In the past, lures that have worked for me have been rapalas, z-rays,needlefish,triple teasers kastmasters, jigs and spinners. You can flat line them, down rig them, leadcore them, cast them or jig them. For me, the color of the lure and/or pop gear, has been chosen by the cloud cover. But if it is mostly trout you are fishing for, it seems, that in my experience, the depth and speed has been more important than the color or lure size. Also, location on that pond has been very important in regards to productivity - there are some places, that I have never hooked anything(like the middle), and other places(like along the dam, by the spillway, in the shallows on the east side(for bass and perch) by the inlet and a small corridor on the west side, that seem to often hold fish. For a change and some fun, try jigging in the deepest part by the dam (about 90 some feet deep) - I've pulled out some real big browns and a few fair sized bows that way.

My simple rules of thumb at Rockport:

Fish the structure on your finder.
Avoid the time periods of best waterskiing. Eat lunch, sightsee, or anchor in the shallows and cast for perch or bass until the skiers go away.
Expect the wind to pick up in the afternoon - like the rest of Utah weather, almost always from the west. Somedays when it's windy, takeing your boat out is a challange - if it's like mine(a small tin tub of a trawler) or you have to do it solo, you might find that the only dock at Rockport, has been poorly placed in regards to the wind and waves that are nearly predominat at the time that most people want to take out. I sometimes have a wrestling match with my boat and the waves at take out, because I often fish alone. Just a heads up on what to expect.

If you see a green tiny tin tub with a tinier Evenrude being trolled by an ugly dude usually by himself, but wearing a stylish hat and a hugh grin - give me a shout out and maybe we can share a berverage and swap some fishing stories.

The few times I have fished Rockport from my boat I have done well trolling straight out from the boat ramp, out near the middle has often been good. I have also found them near the river inlet. A red and white Daredevle spoon has worked well:

Thanks for the detailed info Bloodhound, it sounds like you fish Rockport a lot. If I make it up there I'll keep my eyes open for your boat.
Kent- thanks for the info, a daredevil, I haven't used one of those for years, I guess I need to buy one. WH2

I haven’t been to Rockport in years but I plan on getting up there this year. I’ll keep my eye out for the tin tub and extend the same offer to you. If you see me in my big yellow “banana” canoe grab me and we’ll have lunch while the skiers chop it up.
