I was in St. George in early March. I stopped into Hurst Sports and checked out Quail Creek. They said that the trout are biting but the bass fishing was still slow. Standard spinners and lures were working for trout. Also power bait. Plastic worm fished in the weeds was the tip on the bass
I fished at the new Sand Hollow for bass but didn't catch any. I should have gone over to the East shore for them.
Good luck and report back, DKS.

As a transplanted Utahn-Coloradoan who lived in Las Vegas for 10 years, (I moved back to Utah 18 months ago) I know what you are going through. I might suggest though that all is not lost. Here are a few waters to try that might interest you both bassin' and trout chasing.

1. Nesbitt Lake on Key Pittman NWR only about 1 hour north of town.
Has a good population of LMB, mostly small, but a few toads. Good now through June and in the early fall. It is a shallow lake so a canoe is a bonus. Small topwater works very well. Near Hiko and Alamo.

2. Eagle valley reservoir by Pioche A little longer drive than St. George but it is usually red hot in April and May for trout. Small browns and bows predominate, occasionally a bigger fish. Liberally visited by the hatchery truck, and a good little fishery for both fly and spin fishermen. A small stream enters and exits it which can be good too.

3. Overton arm Lake Mead A short drive from town, but a lot more fun than fishing in Lake Mead near the city. There are dirt roads that go into small coves that get little pressure and often have fast action. Often I would just fish with Anchovies from shore and would have 100+ fish days for small stripers, plus channel cats. ( Late April through July) Also, depending on water depth, I would hike South of the Overton boat ramp and hit LMB structure from shore and have some real good LMB days.(May-August) Spinnerbaits worked best for me but occasionally plastics would bust a bucketmouth too. Obviously, a boat allows better access for fishing there.

4. Willow beach; Liberally stocked with rainbows. If you want a trout fix, that can be Ok. I didn't like fishing there that much. You need the AZ reciprocal stamp to fish it.

There, I hope I didn't blab about someones hot spot. I hope this helps. (P:S, I also had a non resident Utah license then and spent a lot of my angling time up in southern Utah)

It's only a few miles farther than Quail Creek -- in fact I believe there is a pipeline that connects them together.

You have to go through Sand Cove to access Gunlock. It filled up after the first big rain storm so the water is muddy. A friend when over there with a couple people and didn't have any luck so they fished Baker instead and caught one brown.

Success at both Quail and Sand Hollow has slowed down alot with this cold front and I wouldn't expect it to improve until after a couple good warm days. Water temps droped below 50 so if you try work it slower then what you'ld normally try for bass.

I'm sure the urban ponds are more active. I know a couple of them have some bass over 7 lbs. I'm sure the water will warm up much faster in those small ponds, which will activate the fish. Your girlfriend should find fishing much easier and probable more enjoyable with consistant action. If this her first trip you better make it enjoyable for her so she'll want to go again.

where are the urban ponds? i'm gonna have a buddy with me too and we are both expierianced fishermen. will the urban ponds bore us or be overrun with a bunch of trashy hooligans getting in my way? if the bass arent biting at quail the trout should still be ok with the cooler water i hope. i've caught a few trout out of there but it was 6 or 7 years ago before i understood the ins and outs of bass fishing so i've never tried for bass there. if i do what are the best areas to target the bass as i'm not very familliar with the lake?
