Quality or quantity which one do you prefer!
#1
I was having a debate with some freinds at work today about catching fish.I prefer to catch a quality sized fish than a large quantitiy of regular sized fish. And it seems a lot of people also agree with the quantity.I know children love to catch quantities of fish and people who never have the chance to fish much but those of us that do it as often as we do i think prefer a quality fish than catching a quantity of dinks. So what do you prefer?

Anytime work or a busy schedule keep me from fishing for several days or even weeks, then it's nice to end the dry spell with just about any size of fish. But catching little fish gets old pretty fast.

Nine times out of ten, a big fish is much more thrilling to catch than a bunch of little ones.

Lately I would have to say that just to have some quality catching time would be good!

good question,i prefer quality over quantity ,but thats just me.When i was younger i always thought that any fish was a good fish.As i have gotten older i want quality,as now i dont measure success on the water by how many fish that are caught.

Quality !!

As some of you said "When I was younger..." I thought more was better. Now that the grey has set in, I release more than I take.

My boys are learning that size does matter and not how many....at least that's what im teaching them.

Quality by far.. Its why, as some will testify, I'll stand on ice over "the spots" for days on end waiting for a looksee from a 15lb+ dink hoping its a toad..

PS,, of course toads come in all shapes and sizes depending on the species.

[#505000]Tough call. I think I would have to side with Quaility though. Sure I want to catch a lot of fish, but I want to fish where I know there are quality fish. I would be happy catching dinkers all day as long as I know there are some monsters lurking around too, and I have a shot at quality. I don't get to terribly excited fishing the small planted lakes because I know they are chuck full of dinkers. Places like Strawberry, and Scofield and some of the bigger lakes I am happy to catch a bunch of dinkers because I also know there is an equally large number of lunkers hiding in there too.[/#505000]

I know that you have to have quantitie to have quality, after all the big ones have to eat.

A lake, or fish their in is like a piramid the insects an small fish make up the bottom of the chain an the bigger the fish the fewer their are.

Like Jordanelle small perch and chubs make big bass and trout.

(Quantities and Qualitys )

Bassrod- the holder of state record smallie would know this better than anybody else... he's correct... think about it I would have quality anytime, but you can have quantity too... if you've caught a huge record breaking fish- you've caught them all... all that fish eaten by a huge fish combines to more than 100 fish inside a trophy fish...

Just another way of looking at things...

I know my Deer Creek 6/4/03 walleye, 28 inches 7.3 pound has eaten tons of fish... so I prefer both quality and quantity rolled up in one... who says you can't have it both ways? [Tongue]

Ocean,
Definately quality!! But it sure is a blast to have the quantities to brag about as well. And even if I catch nothing it is called FISHING not CATCHING lol.

I would have to say that I prefer quality, but I enjoy watching my kids catch anything. Quality or quanity.

I'll take qualitity any day of the week. I've caught enough fish in my short life to know what its like to catch fish. Now I want some hogs. Not that I'm lacking there, either. I mean, how many folks can say they've landed a 10 pound largie in Utah?

I do want some more massive salt water fish, though. I'm set up later this year for some monster ling cod with my favorite deck hand in Oregon. He's getting the boat and my family's going for monsters. Nothing like a 45 pound ling munching on a 4 or 5 pound dead kelp greenling. Nothing like that anywhere around here, at least.

Interesting question. I thought I knew my answer until I thought about it some more. I am going to have to deviate from everybody else and say quantity. The reason is as follows. For most bodies of water I fish I more or less know what to expect. If I fish the berry I know most the fish will be in the slot. If I fish a little high country stream I know I will mostly catch 8-12" fish. Each area has its own appeal and experience. If I soley wanted quality fish then I would miss out on a lot of fun, beautiful country, and great experiences on areas that have lesser fish quality but better overall experience quality. Given I chose what type of experience I want by where I fish, I would like to go to that area and catch a few fish. Therefore, I choose quantity overall since I can to some extent choose the quality by my choice of water to fish.

Another thought. If all the fish were quality fish, wouldn't the fish become an average fish? If it was average, then it's not a quality fish. Again, if a quality fish is soley dependant on size, you can fish for a larger species of fish than what you currently fish for.

Given all that, nothing beats hooking into a good quality fish. As stated earlier though, the excitement comes from hooking into a fish that isn't average.

I just love to fish. Quantity is great but can occasionally get boring. Quality is icing on the cake.

I'll agree with CJE here..... I like quantity. I love catching fish and I've caught plenty of big fish. I absolutely hate getting skunked... For some reason, I just want to catch something every time I go. Thats just me. I've caught a lot of fish in a lot of places and I've got pictures of lots of fish but I have more fun going and catching a hundred bluegills with a chance at a big one than I do going and fishing all day specifically hoping to get a huge fish, and winding up with nothing. Now there is a delicate balance to this. If I was to go to say... Blue Lake and catch one seventeen inch bass, see a bunch of jets fly over, hear coyotes and cranes all day, see no divers, and catch a couple ten inch gills to take home....that would be a good day even without huge numbers of fish hooked up with and landed. If I went and got skunked, it would still be a good day but I would leave feeling like I hadn't really accomplished what I went there for. I doubt I'll ever have the skunk in the boat out there but thats just an example. Something else I've noted..... at some places, you have to fish through a large quantity of fish just to get to the quality fish that maybe isn't as aggressive as all the little buggers. A lot of how much enjoyment you get out of a place depends on your mindset and your intentions and goals when you set out to fish a certain place. If you are out to catch just numbers of fish, it sure makes me anyway, a whole lot more excited when I do wind up hooked up with a trophy. I guess I go into most of my trips thinking I just want to catch fish and that just seems to make me really focus and get the first one out of the way.... after that, I relax and kinda open up to the outdoors around me, start taking pictures, look around, and take it easy for the rest of the day.... Must just be a genetic flaw or something... I hate skunks and I don't want one riding with me all day. [Wink]
