My boat that I just purchused came with some downriggers, this is something i have no clue on using. So what kind of pole do i use? do i just use my trolling pole with the leadcore line? what else do i need to purchuse to have a good setup for downriggin? Maybe a pic off a the setup would be nice

BAIT CASTERS WORK WELL FOR DOWN RIGGERS. 8 TO 9 FT MED MED HVY ROD AND LEVEL WIND REAL 8 TO 15 POUND TEST.

tynyum 9800 are you babtising that fish in your picture or am i see things that looks like a missinary tag on your clean white shirt. any tackle you have will work wth downriggers from spinnng rods to bait casters you can go as lite or as heavy on line as you want the last thing you use is leadcore. its called control depth fishing. invest your money now into a good quality lowarance sonar and have some fun good luck and you will see control deth fishing is the only way to fly.

check out the video on shasta.com that they sell. i have it, and it is great for teaching you the basics of downrigging. one tip, make sure you reel your line down until there is a bend in your rod- this way you can see any nibbles. dont worry about getting fancy poles and reels. i sometimes use my little spinning outfit. good luck.

i just wanted to add my two cents about using a spinning rod and reel with a downrigger. If your going to fish deep say over 80ft a good downrigger pole (at least 7ft) medium to heavy action with a good level wind reel will work alot better then a spinning rod and reel. With the average spinning outfit ,you just dont have the back bone and reel capacity to handle a big fish.If you do go with a levelwind get one with a line counter. As it has been pointed out already ,using leadcore with a downrigger ,really is defeating your purpose, you will find that you would be hanging up alot when fishing close to the bottom with leadcore on a downrigger.

If Iam fishing less the 50 ft down i might use my spinning rod set-up,but any deeper i go with the heavier stuff. When iam using my extra big pop-gear most spinning reels can't handle the weight.

i agree that if your fishing deep you need something with more line capacity than a little spinning reel. ill tell you though, there is nothing like pulling a koke from 30 feet of water with a spinning reel and light pole! if i fish deeper than around 50, like you said, i use a high capacity reel. those line counters are cool- my grandpa has one, and it is pretty slick.

I have two cannon electric downriggers and one crank. I use a medium action 9' ugly stick and a Shimano Callcutta 700 casting level wind reel it holds 480 yds of 17lb test. This setup works real well for me. I like the 9' rod because you can put a large bend in the pole and when you get a full release it helps set the hook. Good Luck.
