On our latest trip to lake X (Wednesday) the park ranger told me my Boat Letters were in violation because they have 3D shading. Mind you I have had my letters for 6 years and have never had any problems before. I have been inspected quite a few times by DWR officers. The park ranger said the Feds are going to take money away from the state if they don't start enforcing the "Block letters" starting next weekend - Memorial Day Weekend.
I did buy my letters at the Marine Products and they look great. They do have shading making them illegal.
I hate to spread the word on this issue but hopefully it will save you a ticket or warning.

are your shaded letters supposed to be a threat to national security ? you would think there are more importent matters to take care of like wake boarders doing 30 mph 50' off you stern sorry pet peeve of mine

This has been a sore spot for sometime now. One ranger says the letters are fine and the next says they are in violation. Here's what the leagal requirements state , "they must be clearly visible from a distance, 3" high, bold, plain vertical BLOCK cgaracters ". So if they are visible from a distance and block (wouldn't seen to matter if they are shaded), you would be legal. But to save the hassle I would get a second opinion from another officer if you like the lettering.

[red] Hey, Aquaman I agree with you about the Jet skiers and the close distance that they keep. If I had a jet ski going balls to the walls on the water, the last place I would want to be is close to anyone.[/red]

Road,
Please read the rule again, the word PLAIN is clearly in there. Plain is plain, not shadowed, not holographic, just plain.
Registered my boats Thursday. They could not find the #'s for my small boat and had to issue me new ones. On the big boat I recieved a month sticker but not for the small boat. Anybody know what's up with this.

[black]I know several people who are getting busted on this regulation. Fishnfool was ticketed on Willard. Hyrum rangers are really cracking down on it too. Lee's Marine has been selling lots of contrasting, plain, block letters and numbers because folks are coming over from the lake and fixing their numbers to keep playing.[/black]

The problem is no two rangers interpret the regulation the same. Some hold the line at the letter of the law and others enforce the intent and that is you can see the letters at the required distance and let everything else go.

I've got custom fonts on my boat but I'd already seen the crack down so I stayed pretty plain but was able to match what little color scheme my boat has. You can order some custom lettering that will match your boat and look good while still meeting the requirements.
