Santa Ana River Opener

Jed Welsh and I fished the "kids" puddle where we had limits in about 20 minutes. I knew we were gonna get em when my first cast of the day, with bait, got bit on the way down. We didn't need our sand spikes at all, the bows' were biting like crazy. I spent the rest of the time (about to 10 AM ) mini-jigging an orange and yellow jig that I always use at the Lakes. We caught them every other cast for an hour. Be prepared to hike down to the water, it is way down. I talked to a water dept. guy who says it will be full in two weeks. It was too good, I would rather have more of a fishing challenge but who can pass it up especially at the barbecue.

I will be out in CA the first week of January. I am thinking about trying for a real monster trout and know that SARL has them. Any advice on what to do? I figure light line (2#-4#), 6' of water, split shot, half a crawler and maybe a power egg to help it float. Any hot tips?
