Ok what would make the skitos stay away from the area we fish at night? Planning on camping out at lincoln friday but last sunday when the sun went down the skitos came out in force! Would smoke from a campfire keep them away? Do they sell stuff at stores to repell them ? The kitties started biting really good as the sun started to down and so did the skitos ] Anyone have any remedies?

Good old-fashioned DEET is the most effective. Next in line is the eucalyptus/lemon formulation. Avon's skin-so-soft is the least effective, better yet, it doesn't work at all. I usually spray it on my hand and apply it to the exposed areas, it spreads the repellant more evenly. I also spray my clothing to keep them from biting through my clothes. When I'm out fishing and the skeeters are in full force, I also wear a head net just to keep them off my face. What I also found that works for me is to wear some thin latex gloves. Keeps the bugs from attacking your fingers and the skeeters won't be able to bite through the rubber.
Smoke could keep them away, but it depends on which way the breeze is blowing.

As far as a repellent let me suggest 3M's Ultrathon. I have used the stuff for two years and let me tell ya it's the best. There are two version one is a spray and one is a lotion. I use only the lotion.
BTW this is the same stuff that the military issues in the little green tubes for our troops.

I have heard, if you eat a lot of garlic the day before it helps keep them away. I also have heard that eating bananas will attract them.

Thanks for the good advice, but don't believe that they can't bite through a latex glove. Mosquitos can bit through denim jeans, t-shirts, latex gloves, and just about any other clothing unless it is very thick. In the high uintahs a few years back, every time we would go to pump filtered water from the stream, they would swarm us and attack. They would even land on our moving hands while pumping. I began to wear my neoprene fishing gloves while pumping just to keep off the little buggers, but they still landed all over my hand and were jabbing their little needle noses down into and through the neoprene. The only reason it stopped them is that is was thick enough that they couldn't stick their noses all the way through it, the distance was too far, but not too tough for them to penetrate partway through them.
Sometimes when I'm fishing for cats at dusk or at night, even in July when it's like 90 degrees and I'm dying of heat, I've had to pull on the long pants and long-sleeved shirt just to keep the mosquitos off of me. Crazy.

[cool]I've never heard of this 3M's Ultrathon. Where can you get this stuff? I've always used 100% Deet in the past that comes in a green and white bottle (forgot the maker), and it works pretty well, but I'm open to trying something new if it works well.

I've used the blue nitrile gloves at Utah Lake at night, and like you said it is not 100% effective, but it helped me endure the skeeters a little longer. In fact, I may have even sprayed the nitrile gloves with DEET for double protection. Like you, I've resorted to long sleeves sprayed with DEET on very warm nights just to keep the bugs away.

I found a pair of pants on Cabela's website titled: Ex Officio BUZZ OFF™ Canvas Pants. "This innovative clothing is made with a revolutionary new treatment that repels mosquitoes, ticks and more. A patent-pending process binds Permethrin, a man-made version of a natural, centuries-old insect control element directly to the fabric."

It was by happenstance that I cam across them, I wonder if they really work.

You can also buy bottles of permethrin and wash your clothes with it and let them soak overnight and it's supposed to keep the bugs away for several months. Just be sure not to put it directly on your skin permethrin is only for clothing.

[cool]That Buzz-Off clothing line really does work. I had forgotten about it, but you bringing it reminded me of a "Get Gephart-let Bill buy and try it" edition on the Ch. 2 news. Well, that stuff works, and he said it was great, but it's a little expensive if I remember right. That fly shop that's downtown like on 10th south and I forgot what east has them, as I'm sure a lot of other shops, but they ain't cheap.

Permethrin is pretty potent stuff, but it seems highly effective. I had heard it was available through doctors only, but I guess you can order it online. Ahhh, the internet. It's one thing they use to treat head lice--Permethrin I mean, not the internet.
If you do decide to use it, know what you're buying:

I'm not sure exactly. Maybe Sportsmans would have it. You might have to search the internet to find someone who sells it.

Permethrin is also sold in the home stores/garden sections under Ortho's brand name MAX. It comes in liquid and granules. I'd imagine you could wash your clothes in it. I think I've even seen some "clothes wash" that may have been the same stuff. If it burns all of your skin off, don't blame me ]

Thanks for the link on this stuff, according to the write up this is some serious cologne. If it is that dangerous how does "Buzz Off" get around the FDA and sell clothing with this stuff? It almost sounds like something they extracted from a Rattlesnake!
