Catch-of-the-day
#1
I just struck the Mother Lode at Deseret Industries. Last night I found a brand new 6'6" Cabela's Gold Label graphite baitcast pack rod in the nylon bag. The clear plastic sleeve is still on the cork grips. It sells for $79.99 in the 2004 Cabela's master catalog. It is absolutely mint. I paid fifty cents (0.50) for it.
I think that discovering "finds" like this are almost as exciting as the sport itself and I very much wanted to share the experience with the rest of you. Do any of you have similar experiences at swap meets, auctions, or garage sales where you have made out like bandits finding the gear you use?

Any name on the rod?
My first take on your rod is that you not use it because of the danger of breakage unless you are very, very careful. It could be extremely valuable depending on the maker and anyone famous who may have owned it. Your purchase price is by no means a measure of its true value and it would be best kept on display above the mantel where you can brag about its glory days fighting bright trout on the Green.

three words; ebay baby, ebay!!

you can get some great deals on ebay. nothing like an $80 rod for 50 cents but i got some $100 reels for $25 each and 150 senkos for $6 including shipping in all that. got a great deal on a bass pro shops tackle box completely full of over 200 plastic lures for $11.

it's my new gear shop. (i hope you guys don't go there and bid against me on the stuff i really want[Wink])
p.s. i need to figure how to use the whole Quote option

THE NAME I CANT RECALL BUT IT THERE. IT IS ON MY MANTIL I HAVE NEVER FISHED IT AND NEVER WILL. THE DAY I BOUGHT IT I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT I JUST GOT SO I WENT TO ROCKY MOUNTAIN FLY FISHING. AS I WALKED IN A ORIENTLE GUY WAS WALKING OUT. HE TURNED SAW WHAT I WAS CARRYING AND TURED RIGHT AROUND. AS I OPENED THE CASE HE GOT REAL EXCITED AND ASK TO HANDLE THE ROD. THE GUYS AT THE COUNTER GOT OUT SOME OLD COLECTOR BOOKS AND LOOKED UP WHAT I BOUGHT. IN THAT MOMENT THE GUY HOLDING THE POLE OFFERD ME 1000 TO 1100 DALLORS FOR IT. I WAS SHOCKED!!! THEN THE STORE CLERK SAID HIGH COLECTOR VALUE WAS 2000. I DIDNT SELL IT TO HIM AND HE GOT PISSED. STARTED HALORING YOU ONLY PAID 13 DALLORS SELL ME THE POLE. I PUT IT BACK IN THE CASE AND WENT HOME.

my best find was a Lew's custom graphite bass rod with a 9" diamond wrap which alone would have added over a 100.00 bucks to the price or 10 bucks

Crossineyes:
I think you have one of the true classic split cane rods from the Golden Age. Probably from a famous maker like Leonard or Orvis or Thomas & Thomas and probably worth much more than was offered in that fly shop. Keep it safely on the mantel and don't fish it. Take it down and fondle it around mid February to start the adrenalin flowing, but never fish it. Celebrate your good fortune. It is now a family heirloom to be passed on through the ages.
