Tips/Tricks/Strategies for Lincoln Beach
#1
My nephew and I are going to head to Lincoln Beach for the first time early Thursday morning. I have been catfishing other places but neither of us have ever been to Lincoln Beach. What tips, tricks, locations, and baits are the best from experiences you have all had there?

[#505000]Depends on what kind of fish you are after and if you are shorebound, boating or floating.[/#505000]

I'm heading out there tomorrow (Wed.) morning at 4AM with a buddy from work. I'll let you know how we do. We'll be in tubes fishing with jigs, spinners and cut carp meat for bait.

We are both getting tubes, but we will be shorebound on this trip unfortunately. We are mainly after cats, but if there are other fish that are being caught right now from the shore, we are up for those too. We just want to catch fish. [Smile]

[#505000]Some white bass have been showing up in the area. We were catching them week after last on minnows, and jigs. For Cats and the occassional stray walleye minnows, and carp work well. I use carp there almost exclusivly now. It's cheap (free), effective, and doesn't get all mushy like frozen minnows do. [/#505000]

[#505000]I hear a lot of people use shrimp, and worms. I personally don't like worms because they seems to really do wonders in attracting the mudders to your line, but some guys swear by them. I also have never really tried the shrimp. [/#505000]

[#505000]If you are planning to fish from shore about the only good spots left are from the levies at the boat lauch. I have done well both in the laker proper, and inside the levies even during heavy boat traffic. [/#505000]

[#505000]I don't know how well you will do from shore though with the high water those levies get A LOT of pressure. I quit shore fishing Utah Lake 2 weeks ago after three less than awesome trips in a row.[/#505000]

Shrimp do pretty good, but still not as effective as good ol carp meat. Plus, who wants to pay $5 a pound for bait when you can snag a frickin carp for free and have 5 pounds worth of bait from each fish, and a more effective bait too.

Worms do seem to attract more mudcats for me too. If the channel fishin is slow, I'll usually put on a worm on one hook and carp meat on the other so I don't get bored if no channels are biting. The mudders keep you entertained until a big boy arrives when it's slow. Sometimes to start the day I'll use worm too just to get the skunk off with a mudder or white bass before getting into the big cats.

I second CP, go out off of the dikes and try either inside or out or both. Carp meat will give you better chances of getting a channel or two, but worms might catch you more smaller fish. I like to use a T swivel (2-way swivel) and hook on both. I hook a piece of carp meat to one and a worm on the other to maximize my chances.

Fish on the bottom with no weight or 3 - 4 feet below a floating bobber with no weight.

If you go very early you should have plenty of space to yourselves. Good luck!

My little trick there has been the same method i use for the walleyes. I put a floater about 18inches above the hook then i use a minnow and just hook it through the eyes.I have seen a lot people run the hook 2-3 times in the minnow but you cant get a good hook set that way![mad] I have yet to loose a fish due to a good hook set.And the cats will set the hooks themselves unlike the walleyes.Hope this method works for you as it does me if you use it.It keeps the bait right of the bottom away from those mudders. If you dont know what a floater looks like let me know. They are very cheap.

Cesar, if one knows how to properly hook on the minnow it is not difficult to get a good hookset and also hook the minnow two or three times. Also, only running the hook through the minnow once, with plenty of hook exposed, and using one or two simple overhand (I think that is what they are called) knots works really well. I often also use magic or stretchy thread to tie on minnows.

I have seen them hooked that way too.But personally i rather lose a minnow over a fish anyday.I have seen over and over people doing that and then trying to set the hook and just losing the minnow. That way you have to let the fish run a bit and then set the hook.I dont use large hooks either unless i am ocen fishing.

I respectfully disagree. I use large circle hooks, and I would estimate 90% of the cats hook themselves, and over 80% of them are hooked in the corner of their mouths. If your method works for you keep using it, but there are also other methods of rigging that are just or perhaps even more effective.
