Mantua question?
#1
I've never fished mantua before and was wondering if this is a good place to bring kids (under 5) for some bluegill action?

Mostly I was wondering about shore access (no boat) and expected catch. You know kids, if it isn't fast action they get bored fast.

After reading Tube dudes posts about good action from his tube and mentioning the kids on shore I started wondering.

Thanks in advance,

Mantua's got pretty good shore access, at least on the west side. The biggest problem is that it tends to get really weedy, and finding a spot to fish through the weeds in the water can be tough. If you go, go early since shore fishing seems to dry up around 11:00 or so.

We've had good luck for small bass on spinners, and I've caught lots of bluegill and perch on small green jigs under a bobber, and that was before the bait restrictions were lifted.

Good luck.

Just a reminder here. BEWARE:SWIMMERS ITCH!!!
Mantua is fun to fish but don't let the kids play around in the water.
They won't be happy later on.

It's amazing that people still water ski in Mantua with the swimmers itch and all the weeds.

Hey Mateo

Thanks for the info. I think I'll have to bring my boy up for a day. It seems to me that finding places with good shore access and good fishing can be difficult, especially with little kids. I'm willing to do some brushwacking but it 's not such a hot idea with a 3 1/2 year old.

I think we can deal with the weeds and we'll have to take a trip up soon.

Thanks again

Thanks d-mack for the info on swimmers itch. I should probably keep the 1 1/2 year old at home, you can't keep him out of the water. He'd wind up in the lake about a dozen time an hour.

So waht is swimmers itch? A Parisite? Are the fish OK to eat?

Swimmers itch is a parasite that is carried by waterfowl. When they poo in the lake the parasite is released and tends to stick to the weeds and stuff. Symptoms usually begin to show up within 24 hrs and within a couple days you will have blisters and be VERY uncomfortable. I would compare the symptoms to poison ivy or poison oak. NOT FUN!!

Pelican Lake is infected as well.

Swimmer itch has no effect on the fish whatsoever. They are perfectly fine to eat and handle.

It's really not something to worry about to much, you just gotta stay outta the water. Have fun!!
