Capsized boat on willard
#1
My friends father and brother were out on willard. In a bayliner bass boat that was on sale here on the board 2 weeks ago.
Anyways a water skier came too close to the boat and caused it to capsize. Everyone is fine but alot of tackle and rods are now in the lake. Now the father is a fairly large guy from what I here. They didn't get the boat info and are just out of luck now. just thought if anyone was out there today a saw this that maybe they had the skier boats info they could maybe get some compensation

Man that is harsh! I hope they catch who did it. I've always preached that the parks service needs to enforce the boating distance law, but they never do, and so i goes on unchecked.

[font "Arial Black"][red][size 3] I hope that they are alright, man this waterskier thing is really getting out of hand. It's almost like they are Targeting the fisherman on purpose. I understand that they can use the water too, but whats up ?[/size][/red][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][black][/black][/font]
[font "Comic Sans MS"][black]I have had more close calls this year than ever before.[/black][/font]
[font "Comic Sans MS"][black][/black][/font]
[font "Comic Sans MS"][black]We fishermen don't own the water but it is as if we are targets. [/black][/font]
[font "Comic Sans MS"][black][/black][/font]
[font "Comic Sans MS"][black]Also, with all the open water, it amazes me how skiers concentrate on the water edges where slow moving fisher types are trying to take in a little peacful enjoyment.[/black][/font]
[font "Comic Sans MS"][black][/black][/font]
[font "Comic Sans MS"][black]I've read a lot of bitching and complaining (some from myself) about skiers. But I have read very little official anything encouraging skiers to show fishermen a little respect.[/black][/font][/size]

Maybe we should all invest in paintball guns and "earn" ourselves a little respect the old fashioned way. (just kidding people...that would be a really good way to get yourself into a fight.) Would be cool to straffe a skier when they buzz you though...[shocked][cool]

I was out there Tuesday night and must have been "buzzed" a dozen times or more. I could actually see the whites of their eyes as they skied/wakeboarded within 50 feet or so. It was like I was invisible or something. I like the paintball gun idea, however, we would end up being the ones in trouble. Maybe we should bring our spinnig gear and keep it loaded with a 1oz casting spoon and a large treble. Actually, the best way to handle this would be for EVERYONE to call the state parks and complain. Its no longer a matter of consideration but now its about saftey.

P.s. contact the Utah State Parks Regional Supervisor over willard bay:
Jay Christiansen at (801)533-5127. If we all join together maybe our voice will be heard.

Most of the time the boat drivers just do not know the law.

For example - last year at DC this wake boarder was coming right at us. I even hooked the horn and took off after them and caught the boat load of skiers. They said we stay the 50' away from you and when I said it was 150' and they are responsible for their wake -they apologized.

But as we all know ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Other states are now requiring boat operators licenses - should we go that route? - YES!

Up in Oregon they have a solution - It called a Magnum Wiggle Wart. Casted at someone will change your ways pretty quick.

Iam lucky i guess ,the gorge seems to be big enough for every one,but i was wondering how low a boat has to be sitting in the water, for the wake of a skier to swamp it.If that was all it took that boat was sitting way to low in the water to start with IMO .

I agree, unless one of the guys in the boat stood up as the wave hit the boat, it should never have happened. If I remember correctly, the boat is a 14 footer, so it is possible. WH2

Nowadays, these ski/wakeboard boats come eqqiped with pumps and holding tanks so they can take on water and create some monster wakes so they can pull tricks etc. etc.. I don't think it was the wake from the skier but rather the boat itself. Some of the nicer/bigger boats can easily create a 3 1/2 -4ft. wake. Its too bad that a fisherman in a 14ft boat has to take evasive manuvuers to avoid a wake that hits ya from the side while trolling. My point is, most of these lakes are big enough for everyone, everyone with common consideration and courtesy that is.

[font "Times New Roman"][black]Two years ago I hooked a boat while trolling for Musky, or should I say he ran in to my line, Took the rest of the line off the reel then it snapped. I call 911 and they responded with an officer at each boat ramp looking for the boat. It took two hour for them to find the boat when they did they got back to me to complete the report. To make a long story short they ended up with a $70.00 ticket after going to court, and I was paid $20.00 for testifying in court. [/black][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"][black]It those do some good to use your cell phone and call the park or sheriff for the water you are fishing when boats come to close. Take a pair of binoculars along with you and write down the VID number of the boat, this will give then the name and address of the boat owner.[/black] [/font]

This is somewhat off the subject but kinda not.

My X inlaws and I were out at UL and there was a guy in an SK (V8 speed boat)
We were still in the harbor taxing out to the main water area and that guy in the SK come screaming in almost full throtall, way into the no wake zone, and dang near hit us.... Well the wake hit out 26' searay and knocked one of the kids into the water that was by the side of the boat.
we got him out and my Father in law was PISSED!!!
He went back into the harbor where the guy in the SK was picking up more girls and cussed the guy out. They guy called my Father in law everyting but white.

Being the man that my father in law is. quietly left the mariena and waited out in the open water for the guy. When the guy came out we watched him to till just before he got out of site and then followed.
To make a long story short. The guy had stopped out in the middle of the lake and my Father in law gunned it and headed straight for the guy. Just before he reached him my Father in law turned real sharp and SWAMPED the SK... Needless to say he sunk it!

We just drove away. I didn't feel like it was the right thing to do. But that guy deserved it.
I say that because at the time it was my 7 year old son who was knocked into the water.

Take it how you will. Just my story.

I don't want to ruffle any feathers here either...[unsure]

Have you ever tried to fish Bear Lake in the summer? expecially on the weekends.[mad] Last time I did I was out in 100 feet of water downrigging between sweetwater and the marina there were six jet skiers that came over and decided they needed an audiance. After about 10 minutes of this I yell and tried to wave them off, one guy just come over stopped gave me the finger and took off. I have a fairly good temper but stuff like this just tips me over. Needless to say they win I just put my boat up towards the middle of june and bring it back after labor day.

If everybody that uses BFT for info would write the DWR and Utah
Parks and tell them what's going on with the water skiers and jet
skiers maybe they would get there boats out and do something
about it before someone gets killed!!!!!

I probably am not going to win any popularity contests for this post, but here goes. Back in February, when most of the posts on the site involved guys telling how long it took to catch their 20 perch at Rockport, or how much slush was at the Berry, the honorable(?) state senator Tom Hatch of Panguitch got through an appropriations bill in the State legislature that CUT the enforcement budgets of the DWR and State Parks by several hundred thousand dollars. Unfortunately, the bill was ratified by the full legislature and passed. The DWR and Parks Division were able to pick up some financial crumbs at the end of the session and didn't have to lay anyone off, but are strapped financially to maintain the minimal enforcement now in place, thanks to the LEGISLATURE! Where was the outrage then? Did anyone write their representative about this at the time? (It was discussed here on the forum.) It is well and good to complain to the DWR and State Parks about these problems, but the State legislature empowers these agencies to enforce the law and PAYS for the rangers in the field. If we really are going to see a change in what happens out at our lakes, it will take place in the State legislative sessions in the winter, not in the summer. One other thing, it doesn't sound like a lot of new laws are needed, (although I like Lundmans suggestion of a boating license) just proper enforcement of existing laws. Ok, I'm off the soapbox.
Tight lines to all this weekend.

There is no one to help us except ourselves. It is a simple matter of taking the time to report what happens.
We must get an accurate discription of the boat, who was in the boat, who was operating the boat, what took place and the exact time and location. Then simply pull out that cell phone most of us have and call the proper authorities. File a written complaint with the officer who responds and be willing to testify in court.
As far as who has jurisdiction there is, the ranger, DWR and the Highway patrol, Yes people this is Motor vehicle and traffic law.
Now don't be to upset if nothing seems to happen right away, the LEO will more than likely wait for the offender to return to the ramp instead of going after them, they will wait until they have backed the boat trailer into the water and started to load the boat. This is so that they can figure out who has to do the sidewalk calistetics. If the boat or tow vehicle operator is intoxicated they get that ticket too. This is the one that will stick because the LEO was the witness, this is the cahrge that gets the truck and boat towed to a inpound. This is the ticket that is 1k to defend, 1k to pay for and increases their insurance by 1k a year.

As far as running down an offensive boat and swamping it, You are now open to prosecution from several fronts. It was prethought and carried out with the intent to cause harm. Hit and run, reckless endangerment, vehiclar assualt, manslauter if someone dies. If I had seen you do this you and your father-in-law would have spent the night in jail.
No matter what the idiot did before, you intentionally went after then caused harm to them. Your drivers licence would be gone, the boat and truck would be gone (evidence used in the commission of a felony) and the civil suit would take everything else. Might have just as well pulled up and started shooting a gun at them.

Just keep a rod handy with a huge & heavy bass plug complete with 2-3 large trebble hooks. When one of these jokers come by within range, cast it out and nail the sucker. If he complains to the authorities, you can honestly say that your cast was much less than tje 150' the unfortunate person was supposed to be from you and he just ran into your cast. All true statements. Maybe next time he will keep his distance. I know I would. Mr. J.
