You know CP, I'm as anti-crowd as anyone (i.e. the near psycotic break everytime I get drug into Costco or Wally world), but I think it might be worth the nervous breakdown just to exerience the event that is the grand opening.

I talked to an employee in Grand Island a few days ago, and he said, stay away for a least a couple weeks, it will be less crowded, and much more enjoyable. We could have a tailgate party in the parking lot![
![]() By the way, the Lehi store will be twice the size as the Sidney, Nebr. store. [signature]

So, just to satisfy my curiousity, what is it about cabelas that has you guys so excited?
If you compare prices cabelas is far from the cheapest. Is it the show room floor atmosphere? If you look at the selection of lures, and take away salt water stuff that wont be stocked in the utah store, they really have a much more limited stock than lots of places. I am just curious since I am not as excited as some others. I would much rather have an Academy or a Gander mountain. Less show room stuff, more selection and the big one, better prices. Also I think that its more important to recognize that places like hooked fishing tackle and custom sports and the small shops are where you get your best service. The big stores like cabelas, bass pros, sportsmans, ect. wont order you in things that they dont stock in thier system. You think not? Try getting cabelas to order you a Wade fishing rod. Aint gonna happen. See, thats the problem with retail. Shelf space is limited, and the bigger you get, the more restricted you are on what you can do for your customers. Cabelas is a fancy show room, with big displays, giant fish tanks, ect. But when it comes to selection, price, and customer service, you cant beat the small shops. So, I just wonder what the big hoopla about cabelas is. Yeah its cool that they have given us one more local option. But to me, thats all it is. An option. But they are going to carry the same stuff they always do. And they wont carry the things they dont. But to pay more money for a product and have to drive just doesnt get me excited unless its something I cant get anywhere else cheaper. That basically has my restricted to cabelas brand items and a couple odds and ends. just not overly excited about that. But I truly hope that you guys realize that your money is very well spent in the small custom shops who bend over backwards to make your day. Not the big name with the fancy show room who sends you away without even trying to accomodate you. Even worse, for me, cabelas just shot themselves in the foot. I just bought a Kistler helium LTA rod that cabelas carries, but I didnt order it from cabelas cause its was faster and cheaper to get it straight from kistler. Kistler has it on your door in three days and you dont have to pay sales tax and the shipping is less becuase they dont do it on a per item cost basis. Why in the world would I buy it from cabelas when its faster and cheaper to get it from kistler? Cabelas was going to take two weeks to get me one. Plus tax and shipping on $250.00 But thats kind of the point I was trying to make. Retail is retail no matter what name you stick on it. Cabelas is retail, bass pros sportsmans, whoever. They all have the exact same problems and issues. So I just dont see the big excitment. I will be interested to see however the opions of people after cabelas has been around five years, the glitz and glam has worn off, people have had thier complaints and realized that its a retail store with all the same retail store problems. Ahmen! Brother!
No more unfair trade, they Have to pay Sales tax too! Wahooo! Now guys will not have to send their broken equipment in they can just take it back to their store. For my customers they can spend $15.00 in gas in hopes they can save a nickle. Checking out the dead animals that somebody else shot should be cool though. [signature]

Dont get me wrong...I am ALL about small retail, if i wasnt given these cabelas bucks i would not be shopping there. I am more interested in going inside and checking out the exhibits and the live fish that they have.. I have never seen a trout in a tank .. or a catfish. I also did not know about the local stores..where are they located?? I would love some place better to shop than the local Kmart( which is where i have resorted too). Anyway, I am in agreement with you that it is just a big fancy name, but like all things they will have their niche market too.

In one word SELECTION. I like to support HFT (been there on several occasions and will go back many more times) and the other smaller shops, but let's face it, the selection can be extremely limited, and in some cases non existent in the smaller shops. BTW -- for some of us we travel further to support a local smaller shop than we do to go to one of the large stores -- all depends where one works and where one lives.

HFT, think about it, I'm out for the little guy 9 times out of 10, but look at it from my perspective (somewhat skewed or screwed). Hooked is 30-40 minutes away, Sportsmans is 15 minutes away, Cabellas will be at the most 20 minutes. Cabellas is not just a sports store its a happening an event, like the godfather of sporting goods. Plus, I wanna see what I wanna see. IF Hooked was in my back yard, you'd have to kick me out every night.
I like some of the people at Sportsmans, I like everyone I met @ hooked, but you just gotta go see it first. Then decide where you dump your hard earned sporting bucks.... [signature]

I was in retail management for 6 years prior to deciding I hate retail. ( thats why I went into the garbage business. People tick me off, I can roll up the window and cuss at them all I want.) But anyways After being a pawn for the big evil empire, I learned alot about the value of service. I drive 20 min. each way to go to hooked because of the consistant, friendly service. Most large retailers start out well, but after a couple of months the service falls off. Then I am stuck looking at a wall full of stuff I don't really need, and a select few items that I do. I am more than willing to pay a few extra pennies to get the stuff I need, instead of a few bucks on stuff I don't. Nothing better than good, knowledgable customer service! I was really impressed when I walked in to Hooked and asked for a certain brand of fishing rods. The response was that they didn't carry that brand, but they could order it and have it here in a couple of days. They didn't try to sell me something else, just the item I wanted. That to me is the difference. Small shops care about selling me exactly what I want. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have been to bass pro shops before and they are nice to visit .There is always a great selection with the giant stores plus they also carry a lot of things that are not in their catalogs.

I will go to Cabelas after a month or so from Grand opening just to see the displays. From what I understand it can be quite impressive.
Then, when I am ready for more gear I will open thier catalog, pick what I need, and drive to HOOKED and get it! Customer service is the key to keeping repeat customers. I may pay more (not always) but the staff at Hooked more than make up for it. Keep up the great work James! [signature]

More for the hunter I think.
I am probably still going to buy most of my stuff online or WalMart, Sportsman's Warehouse & Kmart. When I think of Cabelas ... I think HUNTING. [signature] |
