Way to go Chuck! I have put in my time, I guess I need to break down and hire a guide if I am ever going to catch a big one. I recognize exactly where you guys were fishing. Did you catch doubles and then catch no other fish?

I'm glad that you had a wonderful experience with Jim, but like all guides there are other fishermen I have spoken to who have fished with him and don't share your positive views.

THE PEOPLE YOU HAVE SPOKEN WITH MUST NOT HAVE DONE WHAT WAS ASK OF THEM TO HAVE A BAD EXPEIREANCE WITH JIM. HE TELL EVERYONE WHO CALLS HIM THAT HE WILL YELL AT THEM IF THEY DO NOT FOCUS ON WHAT IS GOING ON. HE MAKES IT SO CLEAR AS TO THE POINT THAT THE ANGLER BETTER BRING EXCEDRIN FOR THEIR HEAD ACHE... HE HOWEVER DID NOT YELL AT US FOR WE CAN FALLOW DERRECTIONS. HE DID GET PISSED WHEN I LET OUT A LOAD YE HAW. THEN HE EXPLAINED THAT THE OTHER BOATS COME IN AND FISH THE HUMPS IN FRONT AND SPOKE THE FISH. OTHER THAN THAT IT WAS A PLESHURE TO BE IN HIS COMPANY. IF I WAS ANYONE INTERESTID IN A GUIDED TRIP I WOULD WANT MY GUIDE TO CARE IF I CATCH FISH. NOW IF I DONT JIG RIGHT AND WILL NEVER GET A BITE THE WAY IM DOING IT I SURE A HECK WANT TO KNOW I NOT EVER GOING TO GET ONE THAT WAY. AND BY YELLING AND CURSING AT ME I KNOW HE WANTS TO ERN HIS MONEY NOT JUST TAKE IT... LIKE THE TROLLING GUIDES NO BITE YOU STILL PAY. ASK YOUR SELF WHAT YOU WANT FROM A GUIDE, A DAY ON THE WATER OR A PICK WITH A HOG. ILL TAKE THE PICK EVERY TIME!!!!!!

To each his own. I would also definitely want to be told when, in the guide's opinion, I am not fishing correctly; however, I do not want to be yelled or cursed at by anyone, and for sure not by someone I am paying to provide his services. IMHO -- if is not necessary to yell or curse for one to communicate, and in fact it gets in the way of effective communication.

[black]Frankly, I think the cost is pretty reasonable, if you can afford it. How many trips do people take before learning how to catch trophy fish on the Gorge? C’mon! How many trips have we taken on our own to try for big macks and come home skunked? $200-$300 to keep from reinventing wheels is well worth the money. Actually, it sounds like a great bang for the buck.[/black]
[black][/black][black]Intense people who are very focused can also be very demanding. If you are not the type of person who can be around type A personalities you probably will be offended when the voice volume becomes higher than normal. Thick skin is a definite plus. I’d definitely put aside my ego to learn the tricks of the trade from guys like Jim Williams.

Rich -- I was the one who defended the $300 a day -- so don't give me a hard time about that.

HEY KENT HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU GIVE INSTRUCTION BEFORE YOU TAKE OFFENCE WHEN ONE REFUSES TO FALLOW? ONCE TWICE A DOZZEN? SOONER ORE LATER YOU WILL GET PISSED OR JUST GIVE UP INSTRUCTING ALL TOGETHER. THAT WHY HE STARTS YELLING. YOU ARE NOT BEING PICKED ON... HOW MANY TIMES YOU BEEN UP AND HAVE NOT BOATED A HOG. TEACHERS ARE INTENCE IF THEY WANT YOU TO LERN. PASSIVE TEACHERS SELDOM GET THE RESULTS OF STRICT TEACHERS. TAKE A TRIP WITH HIM AND LERN MOORE IN A HR THAN YOU COULD IN A SEASON. I PROMMIS!!! I NOW CAN GO UP ANY TIME AND REPEAT THE PROSSES WITH SIMMILAR RESULT. KEY TO SUCCESS IS REPPATITION.. ASK ANY MILLIONARE. THATS WHAT HE WILL SAY. AND FISHING IS NO DIFFERNT. SORRY I THOUGHT YOU AND CHUCK WERE FISHING FOR EYES. MAYBEE HE SAID IT WAS CURT. I FORGOT. SOLID SETS TO YA.

To each his own. Personally I think $300 for a good guide for a day is reasonable. And, having fished different places with a number of different guides through the years, I would put Jim Williams at the top of the list in terms of his ability to get you a good shot at a big lake trout and to teach you about proper technique. I fished with him for two days in July of 2004. He's not someone who will keep you laughing all day with tails of his explolits, like some guides I've had, but that's not why I shell out the $$ to hire a guide. He's intense and focused, but I certainly don't consider him to be impolite or inappropriate or unfriendly or "demanding". I'm one of those clients who didn't always "get it" the first time with him and I wasn't "yelled at" and I don't recall any cursing at all (except maybe by me when I missed yet another hit). Anything said was constructive and designed to help me become better at fishing for those monsters.
Now, let me contrast that with the experience I had with another guide on Flaming Gorge in late Sept. 2003. That guy charged us $250 for a 4 hr. trip and when the 4 hour mark was reached, he was done - fire it up and back to the marina. We caught a total of 4 dinks (and the guide hooked 2 of those!). I have since learned a ton about technique fishing for those big lakers (in large part due to several very generous people I met on this site who have helped with their advice on lure selection, techniques, secret spots, etc.), and it is now clear to me that that guide was simply using my buddy and me to finance his morning fishing trip. We learned absolutely nothing useful about technique, lure selection, etc. He didn't criticize anything we were doing, but he didn't teach us a damned thing either. We were sort of irrelevant to him except for the tab we paid.
So, I'd much rather fish with and learn from someone who knows what he's doing, even if his manner might not be as warm and fuzzy as some other guy's. And $300 is not a bad price for a knowledgable guide for a day, anywhere.
But....I caught my first 25 pounder as a result of help I got directly from people on this site. So, a guide isn't everything, even if you're a rookie!
