Can anyone tell me about Salem pond? My mom lives in woodland hills and I will be staying down there this weekend and wanted to fish salem pond. Are there regulations against the use of an electric motor? Also is there any bass in there?

It's my understanding that if you want to use an electronic motor, or any motor for that matter, you must obtain a permit from Salem City. I'd give them a call just to be sure.

I've caught some bass in there, but it was earlier in the spring. I tried there a week or two ago for largies and didn't get so much as a bite. The catfish in SP, however, are almost always willing to play. Try using worms and shrimp near shorelines that don't get as much pressure from shore fishermen; the shrimp/worm combo always works for me.

A better bass fisherman than I, like yourself, may catch a few largemouth in and around the ubiquitous reeds that grow along the shoreline of the pond. If you're successful with the bass, please pass along the tips as to how you caught them.

Just a heads up that this weekend is Salem Days, which is salems big celebration. You may have a little more traffic and also on saturday night parts of the pond will be closed because of the fireworks that happen on the pond.

Let me know when you plan on fishing and I may come down and join ya.

Plans are to hit it Sunday morning after the aftermath. And also reason for staying is just for the Salem days, I hear the fireworks display is going to be amazing. Smile

Thanks for the info and if I get into the bass I will let you know, although I am sure the fish will be scared out of there fins from the boom boom boom.

[cool]Hey Craig, I guess there's bluegill in there too after just reading catman's thread about taking his little boy down there. Sounds like fun. However, whenever I read a post about that place I still remember watching the evening news a few months back and remember seeing a car being pulled outta there with a lady inside that had been missing since the fall. Apparently she just drove in there at full speed ahead to give up on here life. Pretty creepy, but I guess now that she's not a resident of the lake anymore, it's cool to fish it. Kinda makes you wonder though if any other "missing people" are in there.

Good luck fishing. You may just wanna take the pontoon and some paddles if you're not allowed to use the electric.

What I caught down there were green sunfish. I have heard there are bluegill there from other BFT members though. I caught the green sunfish in the tiny pond to the South and adjacent to the main pond.

[cool]Oh Yeah, sorry about that. Green Sunfish. Same family (sunfish) though, right? Sounds like a fun little pond. Gotta go check that one out sometime.

Yes they are from the same family. In fact, many people (including me once in awhile) confuse the two. Bluegill look very similar to green sunfish, but they grow a bit bigger. Green sunfish have sort of bluish green maze looking lines on their cheeks. Bluegill have blue near their gills giving them their name, and especially near the spawn have bright yellow throat.

Here is a pic of a green sunfish I caught the other day at Salem Pond:

Here is a pic of a bluegill that TubeDude posted awhile back:

If you get a bite and if you try to set the hook and just get a snag you mite have had a wore mouth bite they like the rocks.
