Seeking Rock Creek Information
#1
First post here...

I would like some information about stream fishing at Rock Creek. I have never been there. What is the best way to get there from SLC? I don't have a tribal permit, so I will go to the national forest areas. How long of a drive is it? Do I need a 4WD or high clearance vehicle?

Any recent information on fishing, especially with flies (particularly terrestrial and hoppers) would be appreciated. What kind/size of fish can you catch there? Is fishing available above/below the reservoir? What about private property? What about parking areas/access?

It might be best to email me any information, so as to keep this small stream as "small" as possible. [Wink]

I have not fished it in a few years but I use to hit the river often. One of my favorite spots is about a mile up from the yellowpine campground (I think that was the name of it) There was a pull off and we would hike to the river (maybe a block away for the road) We would then fish up stream. I love fishing the river with a Goddard Elk Hair Caddis and Hoppers size 14 for both sometimes a 16. I love this stream and have some close ties to it. Me and my dad use to go the river every year, just me and him and fish for a few days. We would eat the wild rasberries on the side of the stream and I think every trip we would have to sit and wait for a moose or 2 to get out of the river in front of us. The last trip I made up there I pushed my dad in his wheel chair along the trail in the campground and let him listen to the river and we reminised about the old times. That year we rented a cabin up there by the dam and he told me to go fishing without him. I went to the river and I could not bring my self to fish without him. I gathered berries and brought them back to my dad. He passed away the next year and I have had a very hard time going back there with out him.

Enjoy the trip and catch a few brookies and maybe a brown for my dad.

I forgot to add that the road is paved all the way to the dam and you can bring any vehicle on the road. It takes me around 3 hours from Salem to get to there. When get up the canyon a little ways you will see some man made lakes on the west side of the road. This is the begining of the forest service area and there is some nice browns in the ponds. You can fish the river from here on up stream. Good luck and please let me know how the fishing was, I really would like to know.

It is more of a personal thing. I have started many new traditions with my kids and also continued many of the other ones that I had with my dad. This one is still hard for me and it has only been 2 years and when I took my dad up there the last time my kids were with me. I know that I will get them back up there and we have even talked about it.

My traditions passed on are the deer hunt, grouse hunt, fishing Thistle creek and Diamond Fork river (My dads favorite stream). And I Agree that it is important to pass theses traditons along.

Thanks for the replies. Good comments. I hope to get up there soon (within the next few weeks.) Maybe I will post a report if I remember to.

By the way, has anybody taken that dirt road that goes from Hanna over to Rock Creek? The sign says it is 17 miles. I have heard from other sources that the road is ugly, but I was wondering if anybody here has ever taken it. Is it a bad road that requires a 4WD and/or high clearance vehicle?
