As some of you know, I am a former Minnesota / North Dakota walleye fisherman who has been enjoying the walleye fishing in the area ..... but I have decided to go try for some Kokanee and/or Macinaw in the Gorge next week. I already have downriggers on my boat, so that part of the equation is solved. I have reservations at the hideout canyon campground and was wondering if that general area has any prospects for kokes and macs? Also, I heard that the Kokes get lockjaw and will not feed just prior to the spawn.... is this accurate? Any help would be appreciated!!!

Welcome to the great state of Utah and to the many lakes that we have to offer. As far as the Kokanee go Flaming Gorge hold's a plentiful amount and there are some huge fish to be caught. Hideout canyon is a beautiful place to camp and there are a few spot's right there close "the wall across from the campground is good...as well as the left side wall that is adjacent from the campground. The best places to fish are further north in the wyoming area. For starter's rawlins/pipeline has been heating up but my favorites are still anvil to the squaw hollow area with middle marsh being my all-time favorite. If you get daring the Buckboard flat's area and Big bend are also good.
Send me a P.M. iF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT BAIT'S TO USE AND WHAT DEPTH'S TO FISH.
Good Luck

We were there last weekend and caught kokes that were changing color and had hook jaws, so you should not have a problem catching them. The kokes that are not spawning are a nice silver color but for the most part they were smaller. I'm sure Jared will give you some good info, our best setup was a pink or green criplure with double sling blades. I even caught a few on a green criplure by its self. The key is finding small marks that are 20 to 60 ft deep, usually over deeper water and dropping your downrigger ball down to that depth. The speed that was working for us was 1 to 1.5 mph but that can differ depending on the day. Good luck and let us know how you do. WH2

I fished the hideout area in june. We did really well along the wall and also in the middle of the bay. The fishing there was great. The average size was about 2.5 lbs. They aren't as big as the wy fish but they are a lot closer to your camp ground. Listen to sockeyeslayer he will get you in to some fish.

Listen to sockeyeslayer as he knows what he is saying(good to see you back jared).Reds and oranges seem to be working good also.Red wedding ring spinner's worked good last week for us.
I have never fished for kokes around the hideout area, but as it has been said the bigger kokes seem to be on the wyoming side.
