Fishing Tues/Wed

Fished a couple different rivers with my girlfriends boy the last couple days. Tuesday went to North fork of the Duchesne river to a place I know of but the river had dried up with all the flow going down the Duchesne tunnel. But we hiked and fished the few deep pools fed by springs off the mountain. We caught lots of brook trout in all the pools and several bigger brookies out of the deeper holes. The raspberries had come in so it was fun to eat raspberries, fish, and eat more raspberries. It was a good day for Jacob, since he caught a lot of fish and was kept excited by the few bigger ones he hooked into. The second day we fished Diamond Fork so that we could get into some bigger fish. That was still a fun day but was rougher on Jacob because he only hooked into a few fish. It was harder for him to have to be careful with his casts.... I guess he hasn't really gotten the hang of spot casting. He's more of a lake fisherman with his dad. But his equipment wasn't top of the line either or even good by most people's standards. So, it was a little more difficult but he did hook into three that got off before he could bring them in. I managed to land about ten, hooked about fifteen. The three I kept were 12,13, and 14 inches so decent fish from that river. I did let Jacob reel in a few that I hooked. I had kind of a lame fishing injury from the second day. I had whacked a brown to end his misery and he flipped around while my finger was still inside his mouth. His pretty large teeth sank into my finger and I still today have red spots and dead skin where they drew blood. I had forgotten how big those teeth were... and how sharp. Anyway, overall a great two days spending some quality time with her boy... Apparently he doesn't get much of that at home so it was fun to take him out and watch him react to different things about being on the stream. The North Fork is where I learned to fish so it was fun to watch him go through a lot of the same stuff that I went through learning to catch stream trout. One thing I managed to impress on him over two days.... big stream trout are that way because they've seen a lot of things and are wise to the uncautious angler. You gotta be careful because one little messup and they will be gone until the next time you fish. I also explained that my fishing with plastic minnows was a learned touch on the Diamond Fork and that it took me a long time before I was any good at it. I think he wants to go again, and I told him next time we'll try either Diamond Fork higher up or go to Fish Creek where we can use the same techniques and the fish generally aren't as picky. We fished the area by Diamond Campground on Wednesday and Tuesday when we fished the Duchesne, we were fishing the Cascade Gorge area. We fished with only spinners and plastic bass minnows through the two days and most of our fish came on bass minnows. We did catch a couple fish on spinners but that just wasn't what they wanted so it took some figuring with different colors and that to finally "match the hatch" so to speak. [cool]

He's a fourteen year old boy thats still trying to pretty much figure out who he is and where he fits into life's big picture. So, thinking about how life was for me at that stage, I wish I had had somebody to take me out fishing and hunting. It just would have been nice to have somebody older to hang out with and talk to about different things and thats pretty much why I take the boy out. He's a good kid who, based on his reaction to being outdoors, would much rather be there than bored at home parked in front of the tv all day long. It was a ton of fun and its always nice to be able to pass on some "outdoors knowledge" to somebody that will more than likely use it or pass it on when they get a chance. I probably won't ever get the chance to get a son of my own but my daughter Kasey has been taught most of the things I'd teach him and Jacob appears to be a willing companion as well when I head out to play. I've just been lucky I guess having these two, my own daughter and now a potential "stepson" that like being outdoors with me. I guess I may be trying to make up for what I had missing as a growing boy but I just want to make sure that even if he doesn't grab hold and become a rabid fisherman like me, that at least Jacob has had the chance to experience the great outdoors.
