Bear Lake
#1
Spent the weekend on the lake, what a mad house at the marina. Nearly had to fight my way to the dock so that i could put the boat on the trailer. Played with the kids all day saturday, woke early to go fishing on sunday to find that my aft anchor rope had separated my fish finder transducer from my boat. Frustrated and blind I set out trolling south along the east side of the lake, three cups of coffee later we knocked off the skunk with a 20" laker, had a good time but i won't go back on a holiday weekend again. There are so many seasonal docks there that they don't have any courtesy docks available.

Yes the marina is a zoo on holiday weekends. The good news is that Memorial Day is the start and Labor Day is the end of most of the recreational water crafts on Bear Lake. Try it again this fall when the crowds are down and your 'ducer is working. Yeehaw! We fisherman have it back again until Memorial Day 2006.

[red] I have to agree, RipNLips. Things will start to get better for fishing very soon. I can't wait to get back up there for the Macks. I am thinking of starting a little earlier this year.[/red]

[black]We fish both Sunday and Monday and the fishing was acceptable. Sunday we put 6 lakers and one cutthroat in the boat in 4-1/2 hours of fishing and today we put 4 lakers in the boat in three hours. There are still some very nice fish in that lake. We had our share of missed opportunities though. We lost one toad Sunday and lost another nice fish today. [/black]

[black]Today's fish was lucky. Made the hook set and could feel the weight. He was on for 5 seconds and SNAP! The 15 lb. flourocarbon broke. Reeled up the line and it was cut clean. Must of raked the line across his teeth at hook set. Like I said, not fast action but acceptable. I've had slower days during Bear Lake's "Prime Time".[/black]

[black]I was absolutely surprised though. There were very few fisherman on the water. Mostly skiers and pleasure boaters.[/black]

Vertical jigging were ya?

Kinda tough to troll when the recreation boaters are out.

Mind sharing location and how deep you were.

Most folks that fish Bear this time of year are on the East shore trolling but I would bet Guss point could still produce a fun day if you can find them.

Bring on the Bear Lake ICE!!!! Hope it freezes this year.

[black]I've seen fish over 20 lbs caught during the spawn. The lake record for Utah is somewhere in the neighborhood of 31 lbs. The size of the fish are no where near that of the macks in the Gorge but all the same they are still fun to catch. They fish a little different too. You can get pretty aggressive with them and provoke them into hitting.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black] They are not so much structure oriented like Gorge lakers. That's a fairly obvious statement considering BL has no structure so to speak.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]Pat, I did exactly what BLFG said in his report the other day. No secrets or voodoo. Used the same old stuff doing the same old thing. [/black]

Right you are Rich, I couldnt agree more, 20lbs mac are nothing to sneeze at and fun to catch. I suppose I should soon drowned my 40 year skunk where the Bear is concerned. Altho', admittedly, I've fish that pond but a mere 4-6 hours in the past 40 years and that was during the last free pass when just anyone could walk on water.
Maybe with a little luck I'll still make it up there to tap a few Bear doo's on the noggin' this year before it hard tops. If not, I tend to enjoy standing on the cold when the doo's want to play, or not..
As far as being able to get "more aggressive" with them at Bear, I like the sound of that!
