Scofield, Huntington, E-Lake.

Howdy folks,

I am headed up to the skyline drive area in the next few days/this week(if possible) and was hopeing to get some of the latest news and updates in these areas:

What is the overnight low temperature range now ? I.E. has it dipped below freezing yet or is it in the low 40's upper 30's range ? My hounds want to know if there are still rattle snakes out and about(the temperature range dictates that).

Where are the minnows(shiners) hanging out now-a-days ? Anyone headed that way for a bait/minnow excursion in the near future (this week or so)? In case I don't get any minnows, what else has been working up there lately ?

Hey Pat,

Thanx for the info ! It's that time of year - me and the hounds have to make the rounds. There's sniffs to sniff out there and the boys can hardley wait to wrap a nostril around them. The rattling reptiles are typically the main attractions I try to avoid while planning the excursions.

I won't be bringing flotation this time - the hounds don't like it when I leave them on the shore and have some difficulty understanding that they don't fit on my lap and that there are few watercraft in the world designed to accomodate them. So, I will only be hiking, fishing, and avoiding other anglers on the shore, as the dogs "nap/wade/ruin the catching for me" there on the bank and wait to help me land any fish that they haven't already scared all the way down to the bottom of the lake - besides that, I find it expedient that I be mobile and/or in the hounds immediate vicinity in case they decide to follow their noses upwind - sometimes they neglect to tell me they need to check something out - so, it's up to be to be attentive and available to accompany them at an unannounced moment's notice.

BTW - I have progressed to the point of remembering to bring my camera - however, I still need to get over the hump and start remembering to use it.

I hit E-lake the weekend before last and then the temp's got below freezing. So I am sure it still is.

The shiners at e-lake were still active and catchable then and we came home with a good supply. Good luck and your ventures.

They are calling for lows in the 40's over the weekend in te sanpete valley, so below the freezing markup on top is almost a given. I cant really give any tips onthe lakes up there, i have fished both of them 2 times and both times i have been skunked [laugh]

[cool]Fishhound,

I just thought I'd add my two cents. As for minnows, TubeDude is right, go to E-Lake and go to the inlet side. As you drive in a bit, there's kind of a little dirt road boat ramp into the water. Doesn't get used much, but I've found on my trip this summer that that nice little shallow area is better for the minnows than the deeper (good fishing) areas to each side of it. Load your minnow trap up with 1 piece of white bread all rolled up VERY TIGHT, and chuck the trap out there and let it sit for 20 minutes or so and you should have 20-40 minnows that fast. Let it sit longer and you should get more.

Fishing is great right there. If you are there in the a.m. or late p.m. fish with your minnow about 2-3 feet below a clear bobber. If it's early in the p.m. and a little warm outside, the fish may be a bit deeper, so just put a sliding sinker above a swivel or split shot about 18 inches above your hook/minnow. Good luck, and TAKE SOME PICS!

Thanx Out4Trout !

I am hoping to get up there and camp around E-lake so I can get in some early a.m. and late p.m. fishing. If time permits, I might make it to Huntington or Scofield. I think I have used that ramp you mentioned before to launch my toon and tube, but I didn't notice any minnows when I was there last year - actually I wasn't looking at the time - I was fly fishing. This time however, I will be bringing my traps and nets and I'll have to try that dirt area for minnows - how deep, or far down, or far out, do you drop your trap ?

P.S. Sorry about your team.

[cool]fishhound, throw your trap out about 10-20 feet from shore in that shallow area around or just to the left of the ramp so that your trap is a foot or two below the surface. That is a great area for them. We tried in deeper areas about 50 yards to the right of the ramp (where we were fishing) but didn't get hardly any. It seemed to be more productive for the shiners in the shallower areas, believe it or not. The fishing however was better 50-100 yards to the right of the ramp where it drops off quicker. Good luck and have fun up there! I'll bet the colors of the trees is amazing up there right now!

hey hound just thought i would pipe in.. every one has given you some good tip's.. one tip i'll give you is leave the cast net at home.. right now there is so much moss, brush, and snags around E-lake that it will just rip your net apart.. traps are you best bet there.. another tip i'll give for catching minnows up there is use a plane Bagel in your trap..they hold together better and the minnows seam to like them better as well.. i add some smelley jelly to them some times and that can add more minnows to the traps at times..

scofield has alot of minnows in it as well but i have not done as good traping them there.. your net might work good there tho..
fishing at scofield was been spotey at best lately i have heard some good reports and not so good reports from there.. spin-a-lure or spiner and worm has been doing the best..

huntington has been great fishing the last 3 times i have been up there.. it's a mid mornning to mid afternoon bite tho.. for some reason the early morning and evening bite is slow.. minnows have been doing good there as well as worm's.. if you like to fly fish try a red or black or red and black flying ant.. i seen a ton of ant's on the water last week when i was up there.. a black leech down near the bottom works good as well..

We did real well with the minnows using cream cheese in the trap. I also took some of it and rubbed it on the 2 entry sides and this seemed to help bring them in more.
