Soldier Creek - Sept. 4-5
#1
I fished Soldier Creek at night the 4th and in the AM-noon on the 5th. Night fishing didn't prove to be good, caught a couple chubbs and a small rainbow. I decided to get some sleep and hit it hard in the AM monday.

I launched at 6:30 AM into about 30-40 feet visible conditions. Loads of fog, but it was quite cool and the fishing was HOT HOT HOT. I was using leadcore line and popgear and a chartreuse/green wedding ring and it seemed to be the hot color for the day.

Slow trolling did not prove to be as successful as running at about 2.5-3MPH with 3 colors out on the leadcore. All fish caught were either slot cutts or smaller below the slot cutts from 8-11 inches. I managed 3 rainbows that were all around 8 inches but nothing of size from the rainbows side and a nice 12 inch kokanee. Those trout sure are getting more active with the cooler nights. Some of these cutts gave me more fight and runs than I have witnessed from cutts. Usually they just roll but most of the ones I managed to hook gave me some good runs.

I was pontoon bound so this was quite fun. I lost track around 20. All fish were caught and released so they can grow and become monsters.

Hey Craig, you sure seem to be doing a lot of trolling from the toon these days. How long does your battery last at those speeds?

When I am steadily on the 3-4 setting on the motor I get about 6 hours run time. when I stick with the slow trolling 1-2 setting I get about 8-9 hours run time. I am getting a solar panel charger this week so that should give me an hour or two more run time on a sunny day.

Hey Craig, did you notice if the lake has started to turn yet? This time of year it usually does. I've found that higher up in the water tends to be better when the lake gets all cloudy and such.

Yes, the lake is starting to turn. Lots of floating debris, plus the green crap.

When I trolled friday, faster was also better. The action though was faster drifting and and slowly jigging the chubs we were using for bait. Went back up with my brother in law on monday to search for the the deer I saw on friday. Well the fog was so thick in the narrows that visibility was only 20 to 30 feet. So we trolled for a while till the fog lifted. My brother in law, no matter how many times I show that faster is sometimes better, always wants to fish at paint drying speed. So I would kick the speed up and we would catch a couple of fish. Then he would notice that we were trolling faster and slow us down. I would wait about a half hour and then kick the speed back up. Invaribly we would get a bite right away. We repeated the process till we left at 3 pm.

As far as the deer hunting once the fog lifted the wind came up and we didnt see that many deer.

I was very impressed with your leg strength and endurance to be able to sustain 2.5-3.0 MPH in your toon until I realized you have a trolling motor! [Wink] Great report. How deep do you think your rig is getting trolling at that speed with 3 colors out? Just curious. I noticed a lot of stuff in the water today too over by the ladders but I don't think it has turned all the way yet but shouldn't be far off.

My best guess is it was running around 10 - 15 feet depending on if i had the wind at my back or not. around that general area.
