Help !! Norman Muskie input needed
#1
Well the hunt continues. This friday will be my 12 trip to pineview without even a follow from the legendary Tigers. Ive seen many pictures here on this board over the years, thats about it. Tried a rather larger MEPPS last time out. Forearms pumped up nicely for the effort .... So once again,,,,,, HELP!!!!!!, Ive been trolling weed lines, etc so far, Any thoughts out here ?

my only hit this year was on a broken back brown rabala, Muskie was 36" but a fun fight. there was a tread in here a while back that was pretty detailed as to what to use, where to fish at time of day and map of pineview. Are you trolling or casting? Wish i could give more info but i will search for the detailed post and link it here.

Hey Bob, I think that you and I must have a silent competition going on here to see who can target them toothy buggers and not even have a follow! My next time out will be my 12th attempt as well. I am determined to catch one on a fly though. MGB was even nice enough to take me out this summer and he caught two the time before and one the time after our trip and even hooked one right in front of me (and lost it). I think it is pretty obvious that I have some serious muskey repellent on and I woudn't be surprised if Mike never lets me on to his boat again! Can you imagine if the two of us got together?!....I think the tigers would probably beach themselves before they were in the same water that we were in! Oh well, we'll get them. Jake

Yeah these things are something for sure. I had the same run of luck for sometime with Walleye. Now I have them figured out. So this one is left [Wink]

[size 2][font "Comic Sans MS"][black]I am no musky catching pro by a long shot but I do love the chase. However, for me, I much prefer chasing them during peak success times. Specifically, mid June through late July. Other times of the year it can be a real scratch and dig to get a hookup on a tiger musky. But good luck to you anyway and if you do get one, keep in mind that they are pretty fragile. May I suggest that when holding them, you support their bodies in more than one place so as to not hurt their spinal chord and get them back in the water asap.

Shoot me PM next June-July and I will be glad to take you out for a musky chase.[/black][/font][/size]

Its pretty simple up there right now just throw a spinnerbait or a rattletrap shallow in the brush, deep on the points and main lake structures. I have caught a dozen or so the last 3 trips including a 47" mostly small ones there are way to many. I should have slaughtered that 47 incher! (no good bass eating trash fish)

That's good advice. There should still be plenty of brush in the water. Try to find a place where the brush is submerged at least 3 feet, and there is quick access to deep water. I normally get them in areas like this. Shallow diving cranks work very well in both clown and fire tiger colors. I would also throw a spinner bait with a fire tiger skirt. I prefer brass or gold blades, but I really don't think that the tigers care. You should pick up some bass as a bonus.

I am not a big fan of the big j-13 Rapalas. Some argue that you get fewer muskies, but the ones you do get are bigger. I have not found that to be the case. I have caught more 24-36in muskies on the large broken back rapalas than I have on anything else. And you do catch fewer.

If you go early in the morning, before the power squadron infests the lake, I like to throw large buzzbaits, or other topwater lures. Nothing better than a 45in tiger ripping a buzzbait off the top.

I have only caught 1 on a fly in my life, and it was on a double bunny in orange. I tied it, so I am not sure if you will be able to find one. I used to tie them for Mountain West Outfitters. You may be able to make a special request from the good people at Hooked, but don't quote me. [Smile]

Anyway, I hope you latch into one or two, and I hope they don't latch into you. [Wink]
