E-Lake report 9/13-9/15 - with pics !
#1
Well, I made it. When I tried to edit my last post and update the info on it, I hit post and somehow my 500 word essay dissapeared, so, I deleted it. I didn't have anymore time or I would have gotten there after dark. Besides, the hounds were pestering me relentlessly to get out of the house.

I got up to E-Lake about 4 pm and tossed out my 2 minnow traps and rigged up and started to fish with a crawler under a float. Nothing - not even a bite. I checked the traps after about an hour and then checked the traps - pulled in one trap and there was only 3 minnows even though I could see hordes or them swimming around it. Pulled in the second one and half the trap was gone to the depths where I couldn't see it. Dissapointed, I reeled in my line and there was a minnow on it - it swallowed the worm and hook and I had to discect it to get my hook - a size 6. So, I put on a size 14 dry fly hook and a piece of crawler and was able to pull in 4 more minnows that way. A very slow day.

The next morning, I got up at sunrise and after the steam cleared from the lake and the water was gin clear and I saw the other half of my trap. I put on the only treble hook I had - a panther martin spinner and casted it untill I snagged it and brought it in. I was one happy camper ! I loaded it up again and tossed both of the traps where I was the schools and decided to try the spinner casting for trout while I waited.

On about the 4th cast I got a small 11 inch cutthroat. Put it on the stringer for lunch and checked the traps. One trap had about 2 dozen minnows in it - the other had nothing. Tossed them out again and casted for a while. Got a couple of followers then nothing for an hour or so. Then, another cutthroat decided to hit my lure and I reeled in a 13 incher. After stringing that one up for dinner, on my first cast I got a 9 inch rainbow and released the dink to grow some more. That was it for Wednesday - the rest of the day was for the hounds.

Thursday, I got up again at sunrise and tossed the traps out again, and continued casting the spinner. I got a 12 inch cutthroat right off and strung it up.

Checked the traps and nothing. What is wrong with whole wheat bread ? Are minnows not health conscience ? It was the only bread I brought - doh ! Then I tried to fly cast with a size 18 dry for minnows. They tapped it a hundred times but no takers - just teasers.

Went back to casting the spinner and immediately got another 13 inch cutthroat for the stringer. After fruitlessly checking the traps again and only getting 1 minnow in one trap and 2 tiny minnows in the other, I gave up on the traps. As I was breaking camp, I decided to cast a few more times before derigging everything to come home, and I got a 14 inch cuttroat to bring home.

Total for the trip - 7 minnows on Tuesday. 2 cutts and 1 bow and 2 dozen minnows on Wednesday. 3 minnows and 3 cutthroats on Thursday.

I did remember this time to bring the camera and to take photos of everything - including some fantastic scenery. I will post them in a subsequent post to this thread as soon as I finnish unpacking and get them transfered to this computer.

Great trip - although way shorter than I had originally hoped for(one of my hounds got really sick so I had to cut it short.

Wooohooo ! photos are in my second post - down below.

Hey fuzzyfisher,

I was having pretty good success with using the spinner, and I wanted to save the minnows for other "game".

We didn't find any cats - my air scenter hound was the one that got really sick and his nose was "off-line", so, I had to rely on the ground scent hound - that's the slow boat to china method - LOL ! It's real hard to cover alot of ground that way. We put in about 8 miles on the trail but didn't run across any tracks - the ground dog has to have tracks to follow - but, when he does, he is always dead on the money ! The whole time my sick dog was hacking, sneezing, eating grass and pukeing and we couldn't keep up any pace. So, we went back to camp and I tended to him and fished while he rested enough to handle the trip back home.

Next time, I'll remember a bagel or at least bring some other kind of bread. I also forgot to bring smelly jelly or any thing else to sweeten the traps with. The trip was great but kind of a comedy of errors and a study in forgetfullness.

Wonder if Chuck-A-Rama is missing any serving trays (LOL). I guess it is only appropriate for a Chuck to own one.

Hey Kent,

I know of one for sure that they are missing - LOL ! I can't remember off hand how I came to acquire it - I have had it for way too many years, but I can tell you for sure, that I didn't steal it - I have never even been to a Chuck-a-Rama. But, it has served me very well over the years as a camping/fishing work surface(maybe I should send them a thank you note or request that they pay me for the advertising for them - if they are even still in business).

[cool]Fishhound, nice report. It's too bad that your hound got sick so you couldn't do much tracking/cat chasing. Glad you were able to get some cuts from your spinners.

Like fuzzy said, plain bagels or WHITE bread work great for the shiners (usually). Looks like you were in about the same spot I was at in July. I chucked my traps right off that boat launch thing right behind you in that pick. Guess white bread or bagels work better than wheat bread does.

Hey Out4Trout,

I think it was you that gave me the suggestion to go to that spot and try for minnows. That's all my original plan for E-Lake was - to get minnows to fish elsewhere with. But as it turned out, I stayed there with a hound that was "sick as a dog" and filled in my time with some good fishing on top of it all.

Thanx for the suggestion, it was a great place to camp with almost no other people - and the water was right by my camp so I could cast out and fish without moving more than a few yards - there's nothing like fishing next to a crackleing camp fire with the frying pan at the ready to recieve the freshest fish caught only moments before hitting my plate.

Mmmmm - Yummy ! Now if I could only cook !
