Williard Bay South Marina Closed Next 30 Days
#1
I read in the Explorer, and then called Williard Bay to confirm that the entire South Marina will be closed for about 30 days for dredging.

Hey Thanx FishWisconsin,

Very good timing. I was headed up in that direction with some fishing buddies in the next day or so - depending on the group consensus. Now I know to go to the North end instead.

I was gonna head up there myself in the near future. I am wondering if the dredging will hurt the fishing due to noise, or if the entire operation will help fishing in the S. Marina area as that will put food into the immediate area. Let me know how you do, if you get to the area of the S. Marina.

The plan was to dredge the marina in the spring but for some reason they decided to put it off until now. I think there were so many people using it when the water came up in the spring that did not want to to take it away and disappoint so many people. The two years before had kept a lot of people out of the south marina because of the low water. You won't be able to get in the marina while they are dredging it but in the past they have opened it up on the weekends. They have dredged the channel already so that area should be fishable but I guess we will find out if someone gets over there during the week. WH2

One of my rod and reel setups are in the south marnia . Do you think there is any chance they will give them back or should I call it a complete loss. They have been there for a month now I was sure hopeing to get them back one day.[Wink]

I seem to remember the water being very murky during those dredging operations. The entire marina and even out in the open water of the south marina were pretty mucked up. Do you think this would have an impact on the fishing? It seemed to be the case last spring.

If this dredging forms a "mud line" in the mouth of the the channel on the open water side it can produce a very effective place to catch some late season Walleyes. They will sit on the edge of the mud line and ambush prey as it swims by in the clearer water. We have done very well fishing these mud lines in the spring when the runoff forms them. There are some very large Walleye that hang around the south marina channel and this could be a great opportunity to get them to actively feed during the daylight hours. Our best approach has been jig/crawler combos but you can also be effective trolling parallel to the mud line. I haven't landed a monster but have been witness to two over 8# using these methods.
Good luck.

The reason the channel was so murky when they dredged it last was because that was the only way for the water to get out into the bay. Now that they are dredging the marina the story is a little different because it isn't directly in line to the outlet into the bay. I could be wrong but I don't think any water comes from the marina into the channel, like a spring. So the only water that is coming out of the marina, will leech out in smaller amounts like a side stream coming into a main channel. In my opinion this won't affect the catching, it might make it better in the channel. In years past when muddy water was coming into the bay from the channel, we would troll the mud line and always pick up a few fish. I'm not sure if that was because the water was warmer in the mud line or because there was some food in there that the wipers were chasing. I'm sure we will be getting some reports about people fishing the area over the next month. I wonder why they are going to shut down the marina after they are done, any idea? WH2

[cool]Maybe they'll let ya snorkel for it, Mike. Don't know if you'd see anything in that water though, AND, the water temp is getting pretty cold now but might not be any colder than when you had to dive head first at Utah Lake for your rod that the kittie was trying to steal from ya! LOL. Just giving you sh#$, Mike. Since I take it from you so often, once in a while I have to give it back.

You gonna float the North marina with us this Saturday?
