Help! Minnkota motor won't go forward
#1
Where can I get my minnkota elec trolling repaired in northern Utah? Their website says Idaho Falls but I was hoping for something closer. I believe it is in the handle or the circuit board in the head because it goes great in reverse but not in forwad and I took it to a electrical motor repair shop in Tremonton and they couldn't find anything wrong down in the motor itself.

All this new technology, and one thing seems to be consistent.

The more junk they put on there, the more problems they have.

I cant believe how many minnkotas have been coming back to the stores with guys having problems.

It looks like unless minnkota gets thier increasing quality issues fixed, motor guide may have a shot at a comeback.

One thing I do have to say, if you just send that motor back, they will replace it for you, or get it repaired and get it back to you.

I bought a minnkota riptide autopilot and the thing was defective right out of the box, I sent it to the idaho falls, and they didnt even bother trying to fix it, just sent me a new one.

I had it all said and done, and back on my boat in two days.

I have owned motorgiudes and minnkotas, I have always liked the minnkotas better, but after working in the industry, and seeing how many of the new ones are defective, I am not so sure I am sold on thier brand anymore.

I would send it to idaho falls.

Some of the starter motor repair shops do a good job fixing them, but if it's under warranty then you would probably want to go through a dealer. These trolling motors are after all just anoyher electric motor!

It's gotta be in the controls. A d.c. motor will turn one way with one polarity & the other way when the polarity is reversed. I don't know much about trolling motor controls or if you'd risk ruining them by reversing polarity at the battery to get the motor to turn the other way. The motor directions should warn you it this is a wrong thing to do. If that''ll work, it might serve you 'till you locate someplace to get it fixed.

Here is a simple solution to your problem. If it only moves in revese, and you want it to move forward. Flip the blades around. I know thats most likely not possible. It is a nice thought. As far as the polarity. I know that it works if you hook your motor up backwards to the battery. How i know this? I dropped my motor one day. started trying to control my boat. for some odd reason i was out of control every time I pushed the foot peddle. For some odd reason it moved in reverse when I had it set on forward. Lets just say it took way longer than it should have to find the problem. I had hooked up the battery backwards. Arhggggggg! I felt like an idiot

Don't wanna start any arguments but flipping the prop won't work. In order to get reverse thrust from a prop, ya gotta reverse the pitch. Think of it this way, if you take a nut off a bolt & turn it over it'll still screw back on. Same principal. I learned this the hard way when I was a kid building model airplanes. I came up with this cokamamie idea to build a pusher plane. I flipped the prop & guess what? I totally wrecked the damn thing when it tried to take off the wrong way.
