South Fork
#1
Whew, for a while I thought the South Fork would continue to kick my butt. But not so. I went out with my brother Saturday to do a little fly fishing on the South Fork. Started or right at the mouth of the canyon and quickly nailed a very fat 12" bow. This thing was so fat I could not get my hand around it. Then we hit Magpie. My brother fished the same hole he pulled a 17" brown out of last Wednesday and landed his little brother a very nice 15" brown. From there we hit Botts. Never fished this area, I will again. I found a hole and pulled out 3 rainbows from it. Then around the bend, another brown. If I had my .357 I would have had a nice blue, but alas I was fishing (can't wait for this cooler weather to group the grouse). Continued to fish and spooked up some very large whitefish. Then on to willows where I netted a nice 16" brown and another 12 incher. All told I netted 10, half rainbows half browns and long released 4. My brother got six, 5 browns and 1 beautiful cutthroat. The big brown I got was on a size 18 zebra midge, I caught another off a hare's ear, but the rest (including my brother) was on size 14 to size 16 copper john's (both beadhead and not). My brother did have to takes on a size 8 stonefly nymph, but since he wasn't expecting to catch anything, he missed them. Water is low and clear and the fish are hungry.

We started fishing at 10:30 or so and wrapped up around 3:00. Fishing was good all day. Most of the fish are tight against the banks in shallow water. We only caught two fish out of the big runs, the rest where in the shallows. In fact, I scared some big ones in water I didn't think would hold fish. I talked to another fishermen and he reported the same, shallow water by the banks. Of course, with this cold front coming in, it may push them into the deep holes.

Just a simple question. Did you happen to get your katghoti name from an article Ed Zern wrote in Field & Stream (I think it was anyway) about 40 years ago?

At any rate, It's cool. I'll bet a lotta folks don't get it????

No I didn't. I got the ghoti from George Bernard Shaw who claimed the English language to complex and silly. As a result he spelled fish ghoti. 'gh' for the 'F' sound like tough, enough, 'o' for the 'i' sound as in women, and 'ti' for the 'sh' sound as in nation. Put them together and you get 'fish'. I put the kat on it just for fun. You are right, most people don't get this at all and ask how to pronounce it, when I tell them 'fish' they look at me crazy. Hey, I didn't make up this language. I would love to read the Ed Zurn article, what is it about.

If I remember right, it was in the Field & Stream somewhere around 45 - 50 years ago. Ed Zern used to write a column that was on the last page entitled Exit Laughing. One of his columns was about how to catch GHOTI. Then he went on to explain. I always thought that was neat.
