Its amazing how little I know.

I tell you what, I just love this game.

No matter how much you play the fish always throw you a new one to make you think real hard about what you do and dont know.

I get up this morning and literally break the ice off the cover of the boat. The rain from last night had froze in the puddles on the cover and the cover had several big ice blocks on it.

I finally get to the water this morning, and this is what I found!
[inline 100_0597.JPG]
Visibility of about 20 ft and no chance of sun.
The water temp was 51 degrees. Brrr.
But hey, the water temp was still warmer that the freaking air temp.

So I am looking at the situation and I think man them fish are going to be deep and I am going to have to downsize and go "ultra death slow".

Theres two guys on the dock at the same time as me just looking out into the abyss. They said they have been there for two days and havent got a single fish.

I just Smiled and said, "well, we will see if that doesnt change here shortly."

My hand was froze solid on the aluminum of my reel. I had 18 layers of clothes on, and I was still FREEZING.

But hey, I got lucky about a 1/2 hr in and got a 12 inch bass.

A couple hours later the wind started to blow, that was good and bad, it cleared out the fog, but the wind was super cold.
Wouldnt you know it, above the fog, there was no sun, just socked it clouds.

In about 4 hrs I had three 12 inch bass.

Boy I was not pleased. I was thinking to myself, "man, this is my last trip out this year. Time to put the bass boat away."

Everything I knew told me the conditions were too bad, waters too dark, waters too cold, constant cold fronts rolling through and lasting for days at a time.

They are gone to winter zones and totally inactive.
Thats why I cant catch them.

I am about to leave, I want to hit one deep spot with my plastics before I get out, but theres a long ugly stretch of bank between me and that spot.

Its deep and theres some submerged trees down there. The tops of the trees are a couple feet from the surface, and there trunks are in about 12 ft of water.

I pull out a lipless lucky craft LVR mini, set the electric on 40% and figure I will toss that thing while I pass by.

Second cast I am burning that stinking lipless across the tops of the trees and I get popped.
UNBELIEVABLE!
I get the fish to the boat and its an 18 inch 4 lber!

Nows the part where tomegun gets to kick my butt.
I am using a extra fast tip st croix teaser while my bronzeback crankbait rod with a moderate tip sits there in the rod locker.
Well, just like tomegun was kicking my butt for last night on the phone, the hooks pull out while I am fishing for the net, the fish splashing at the side of the boat.
Sucks when a guy tells you to stop doing things that will cost you fish, and you just keep doing them.

anyways, back to how little I know.
I am just amazed that I got bit burning that bait on a fish that was SUSPENDED over a tree in 51 degree water.

But I figure that was a fluke and just laugh it off until the next cast gets me bit again. 14 incher.

Two casts later I had just as many fish in less than ten minuets as I had all day long.

I never would have guessed.

I fished a bit longer getting bit on that thing, I still didnt switch to a cranking rod. Thats cause I am stupid.

But anyways, like I said, it just amazes me how this game just throws you one every now and then.

Guess I wont put that boat away for the winter just yet.

Crossineyes, while it is true that he is slow and can only operate at near dead speeds, the real issues I have seen while being enrolled in the THOMASEED SCHOOL OF BASS are as follows.

First, the very controlled diet of spam and cheetos is grueling.
Three days in and you have a permanent case of massive diareaha.
It never seems to stop. Theres something about the spam and fake cheese dust that doesnt agree unless you are inbred.[shocked]

[sly][laugh][Wink]

Second, the uniforms are actually last years hand me downs from the gay rodeo circut.
Tough to wear in public. It will break your mothers heart.

Third, the required reading for the course will kill more brain cells than doing meth.
The name of the book is actually "How to catch fish like a 11 year old white girl." Author tomegun.

The hardest chapter in the book is chapter 3, "How to catch the elusive trophy bass. (Bass under 12 inches)

But after years in the program, I have learned all there is to know.
My summary of the course is as follows.
All the lessons are actually about trout fishing. Tomegun doesnt know that trout are actually a different species from bass.

Please no body tell him 8 inch bass arent trophy fish, and that trout arent bass. It would break his fragile ego.

If you see a 45 year old white guy wearing womens clothes that came from a gay rodeo going ballistic on 10 inch trout and shouting about the bassmasters, just Smile and wave.
What he doesnt know wont hurt him.
