Slayerace and I are planning on heading out to powel this weekend and are trying to figure out how to maximize our chances of getting into some stripers. I am taking my little boat (17ft tri hull with 140 hp inboard outdrive) and I don't know the lake real well so I am just wondering from all you who have been lately if you would mind sharing any advice you have. I am trying to round up a trolling motor, but haven't had any luck yet. I can use the big motor though, but it would be nice to have a smaller one. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated. I am goint to try and watch waynes words as well.

Get a map is good advice. I have heard that the boils are done to almost nothing. If you have a finder, then jigging is prolly the best idea. I think someone in here was there not too long ago and did well with 4 inch green jigs.

[black]Hey, Jed,[/black]

[black]Use the search function and you'll find a lot of past info for techniques to use on Powell from the last 3 months. The boils will be pretty well gone but you should still be able to get on fish. [/black]

[black]Are you headed for Bullfrog or Wahweap? You can buy maps there. Get the Stan Jones & Steve Ward's "Boating and Exploring Map of Lake Powell". It is probably the most comprehensive map of Powell. You can buy it already laminated in plastic for use on the water for around $12. A very worth while investment.[/black]

Unless you're not planning on going very far, have a few spare tanks of fuel so that you'll have some range. Lots of boats you see will have 2-6 6 gallon tanks of extra fuel. Without knowing your exact plans, its hard to make recommendations.

Keep your eyes on Wayne's Word for the most current info. Have fun. Powell is a great place.

[black]Not knowing how much you know about Powell fishing, I'd definately spend some time in The Angler's Corner of Wayne's Word. Lots of good info with recent reports both from Bullfrog and Wahweap locations.[/black]

Watch the weather. LP can get nasty if the winds are forecasted. Seems everytime I go, the winds are singing. If you're like me and have schedules you can't change, you go for it but it definately kills the bite.

In addition to a map, if you have one be sure to take your GPS and turn it on when you leave the dock so that you can back-track if necessary to find your way back. If you don't have one borrow one from someone. Lake Powell is a huge body of water and no place to be lost in the dark.

Some good suggestions here.
1. Launch from Wahweap. The Stripers are down that way following the migrating shad.
2. If you see any areas that go back into a cove with tumble weeds in the backs or visible weeds in about 10 feet of water, look for shad and watch where the shad are moving, cast on the opposite side of the school of shad on the side they came from and pop it along with the school. This in most cases triggered fish to bite because of the wake caused by the lure and the sound.
3. Cast a top water lure (preferably a Zara Spook) and "walk the dog" with a jerking motion while reeling to get it to slither somewhat like a snake atleast 10-20 times changing the speed from slow to fast at the mouths of coves and canyons to try and trigger a striper to surface and hit it. If you don't get a bite move on. This was key to find the stripers and caused them to boil. In most cases the boils were non existant until you either found the shad or tossed a top water lure.
4. If there is wake or some heavy ripples it could make it hard for your top water lure to be seen. When this happened I would toss a Rapala Glass Shad and reel it in steady and fast with about 2 full revolutions on my spinning reel a second. The glass shad produced really well for all species including Largemouth, Smallmouth, Stripers, and even a couple lil warmouths pecking at it.
We spoke with one of the Rangers at Bullfrog and he informed us that the shad were present up that way in the backs of coves but the stripers were non-existant. So please seriously consider launching from wahweap and working yuor way east in the boat. It will raise your odds of success.
Have a fun trip Jed.

sorry I was waiting to get the pics back. I will give you a short version though. Slayerace and I came home with around 70lbs of fillets caught around 130 stripers with 28 over 5 lbs. the boat worked great the weather was great and I wish we could have fished longer, but 2 days was good enough.
