Strawberry 10-18 Report
#1
Fished today from dawn until 11 AM and boated 31 cuts. Fishing was slower than I have seen it the past two or three weeks, could be the full moon or bad fishermen, I couldn't tell. I did catch the biggest of the year so far however (pic attached), a 27" long - just short of 16" around (girth), cutthroat that weighed in on my crude onboard scale at a little over 7 lbs. That was a fun one to catch and bring in - and it's still swimming. We caught most on pointer minnows in about 8 feet. White jigs were a little spotty, but we weren't over any real big schools either. Water temp at 49.7 at dawn, didn't change much because of a lot of overcast, we got off before the predicted wind and other ugly weather.

Fantastic fish! And a nice report. On top of the great day, you were probably the only boat out too.

What area were you fishing? My oldest son and I are headed up for two days of fishing starting this Thursday. Sounds like things are getting good at the Berry.

Nice fish. I think I long line released that hog on friday. Had him on for three or four minutes of drag ripping fight. Then my line broke. AARGH!!! OWell, would of released him for you to play with. So what color and type of pointers are you using. Looked at them in Cabelas online and thier are several different types.

Great report again! Thanks for sharing. It takes some intestinal fortitude to let a monster like that go...strong work. Good luck on your next trip out.

I've got 9 lber on the wall from last year (29"), so no need to get greedy. All I know is that there are ALOT of big fish up in the Berry this year. Every trip I am getting at least two at 24" or above. November is going to rule. BigFishRule - try a ghost minnow, it looks like a baby cut, fish are filthy cannibals.

I also fished today from dawn til about 11:00AM. We boated about 20 fish and had plenty of long and short distance self releases. Quite a bit slower than my last 4 fishing trips over the last 6 weeks. We fished north of mud creek using white tubes mainly trolling and casting and retrieving. We covered a lot of ground this morning in all different depths and never could find a school to jig over. The fish were scattered throughout the water column from 8 feet to 35 feet and everywhere in between. All fish were slot cutts with no hogs. I don't know if the fishing has slowed because of the approaching storm, because of the full moon, or because they are scattered everywhere.....? Still a fun day of catching!

Piscispursuit- Great fish, thanks for sharing the pics. I'm still waiting for my hog. Maybe through the ice this winter. You said you were catching them in 8 feet deep. Was that the depth of the water or were they suspended at 8 feet over deeper water?

I noticed the fish seemed to be quite scattered as well. The most consistant bite was in 8 foot deep water. I was going to radio you if we got into anything impressive, but no big schools appeared. Did you get up as far as Jakes this morning? We did fairly well in there three weeks back.

That sounds like an excellent trip you had. We heard the elk bugling in the early morning. I fish there a ton, and have to mix in a little work in the afternoons or my employees start to screw around, so we leave at 11 to go work for a few hours. Looking forward to the pics.

Crossineyes, it sounds like you guys had another great day. Looking forward to your pictures. When you say "the channel" which is on the Soldier Creek side, are you talking about where "The Narrows" starts?

ya we call it the chanle. it can be entered 2 ways from the berry. the main entrance is strait east of sb marina. the other is south east of haws point. only one way in from sc. many great spots in there to fish camp or hunt. and the seanery is way better back in there than on the main bodys. tons moore wild life. yesyerday we saw maybee 20 deer, 20 or so elk, 2 bald eagles, and may bee 200 ducks. and 3 bevers.
