I went into Walmart today to get a few things and thought I'd stop by the outdoor section and I noticed they have some ice fishing poles. They range from $12 up to about $35 I believe. I decided to grab onto a few different types and get a feel for them.
All of them seemed like they might break if a big fish grabbed onto the line, and of course the reels worried me a little bit too. Has anyone else been in there and looked at those? Are they any good? I'd like to get a nice little pole to fish with perhaps the Sportsman or Cabelas would be a better bet.
I'm not sure if I can just switch one of my reels onto these little poles? Does anyone else have any ideas or preferences as to what they use? Maybe I could just cut an old pole of mine and wrap some good ol' cork around the base after I cut it???
Thanks for any ideas

I personally like the black ice rods that can be purchased at Sportsmans Wharehouse. Very sensative but strong rod for less than 15 bucks. Any reel with a decent drag on it should work.

A lot of people make the mistake of buying a super skinny pole because they think they will be super sensitive. The will be super sensitive but they will be so flimsy you won't be able to set the hook on a fish. If you can bend the pole and it make a fairly even bend I wouldn't recommend it. I like a pole with backbone, meaning one you can bend and most of the pole, other than the tip, won't bend super easily. I had a super flimsy pole that I couldn't set a hook on a perch with. I prefer a little heavier pole with a wire strike indicator on it. The wire strike indicators won't restrict the hook set but will give you more sensitivity when watching for strikes. Just my opinion, do with it what you will.

THE STORE ICE RODS WILL DO THE JOB. AND YES THEY DO BREAK IF A BIG HOG GRABS ON, WITNESSED IT TWICE AT THE BERRY. BUT IF YOU HAVE A GOOD GRAFFITE FLY ROD THEY MAKE AN EXCELLANT ICE ROD. I HAD A SAGE AND USED IT . UTWALLEYE PUT IT TOGETHER FOR ME AND OUT OF THE 10 ICE RODS I HAVE IT IS BY FAR THE BEST IVE EVER FISHED WITH.

James - Do you have some ice poles in the store right now? I need a couple, but wasn't sure what you might have ordered in the way of inventory with your plans to close in December.

[cool]Yeah, I second this question, James! I am looking for another ice rod or two, and I'll need one small ice reel (that is reliable, but not too fancy) too, so I was wondering what you have in stock. I'll probably be by the store after work on Friday late afternoon.

Wife? ha![shocked] If she had her way I would have shut down 9 years ago. After announcing retiring I have had several inquiries to buy the store with a couple of them serious. Which is an option I much perfer.
Uinta Ice : I suppose after dealing with Boogers like my son all day you just don't want to see them on the weekend. lol!

Oh boy! These kids ... fortunately, most of them don't live "down" to the reputation society puts on them. It's like when someone asks me what I do for a living.
They either laugh, spew, or ask, "WHY?"
But they're good kids, the majority of them. And the ones who aren't, usually have learned it from someone at home.
Oops! Did I say the wrong thing?

My favorite rod hasn't been mentioned yet. I love my Ugly Stick Ice Rods. There are two models. One has larger eyeletts and the other one has a cork grip. I use a standard reel with 4# ice line on them. Plenty of backbone and still sensitive enough for perch.
Give them a try and you won't regret it.

I agree with James on the Eagle claws, have used them for years.I like the small closed face spinning reel for icefishing(about 20 bucks),easy to use, don't have trouble with line tangles with them. Its just drop down the hole fishing

While I'll try not to be the nay sayer here, super flimsy ice rods do have their place. My favorite Perch rods are Stars (Korean made) I bought at Jame's place many years ago. They have since quit making the ones I love so much, but they are without a doupt the best panfish rods I've ever used. My son caught a huge Bow out of Echo years ago on one of those rods. It's all in hook set and knowing the rod. I probably have 20 or 30 ice rods, with different reels on them. My best advice is; find one you like, put a strike indicator on the end if it's a beefy rod and get used to the feel. Rich hates all my rods, but I catch as many fish as he does. Why, because we are used to a different way of feeling the fish. He likes a composite grafite that transfers the slightest touch to his hand. Since it's stiff, it requires a lot less motion to set the hook. I like a noodle rod that bends at the very tinyest of touches, but mandates a Red Holland like hook set to make contact. I'm a visual fisherman while Rich is a touch fisherman. It's all what you know and like. Since I've known him I kinda conveted to grafite for big fish, but since I fish mainly for Perch, I love those noodle rods still.

I think you need a stiffer rod to set the hook because you don't have the length to take up all the strech in the line. I have both types and I find myself using the stiffer rod with a strike indicator
made from a piano string alot more. I make my own ice rods out of old broken rods I have found or picked up at the swap meet for dirt cheap. later chuck

[black]Speaking of graphite composite rods, James (HFT) is building me a custom rod for a baitcaster. I hate jigging with spinning reels and all ice rods are set up for spinning reels. Hopefully, James will post up a few pics of it when it done. [/black]

[#005028]Check out the Frabill Amplifier rods. They are spendy but very awesome. You can feel the lightest bite and it will still handle huge fish. The handle has aluminum discs in it and the blank (rod) runs through the center of them. They "amplify" any tip movement through the handle. It's true! I just think it's strange that you have to tape the reel on to it. Or am I missing something? I guess it's lighter that way....[/#005028]
