Help the Newbie Lowrance Green Box Easy Question - Las Vegas
#1
Dear fellow fisherman:
I just bought an E-bay special Lowrance fish-Low-K-tor flasher for our annual Ely (Nevada) ice fishing $10,000 tagged trout fishing derby thing. I put fresh batteries in it, stuck the transponder in my little 2'deep desert pond in my back yard & turned it it on. The bat meter reads full, the unit flashes once when I flick it on, then no more flashes. Does not matter how i turn the dials. The motor & flasher bulbspins nicey. Is this normal? Do I need reel (pun, i meant real)water. I bought it as is. Did I buy an anchor for my canoe?

Thanks - Vince- & Happy Thanksgiving

I'm not well versed with flashers, but I hear that the most common problem with them is that the brushes in the motor need replaced every few years. If you are not comfortable taking it apart, I would try a DC motor repair shop. The caveat is that if the motor checks out, they will still charge you a fee for the diagnostic, so you might drop $40 for nothing. Might be worth a try though.

[black]Maybe I don't get it but what would you see in 2 ft of water? You get nothing? A blank screen? Try this. Put the flasher on your counter and turn it on with the transducer hanging straight down. Make sure you have 3 or 4 ft between the transducer and the floor. Put something under the transducer and move it up and down. Even out of water, you still should see the flasher reading it.[/black]

Thanks for the replies!
I was testing it out & thought that the transponder (transducer?) had to be in water. Some one else said that It needed more than 2' of water to flash back. The dial spins around but no flashes other than the first one.

It flashes when the unit creates a ping. It makes a mark at the top of the unit, or the zero point. An echo will show up farther down the scale. If you are getting a light at the zero mark, your unit should be maknig a ping. Make sure you have the transducer pointing down. ( I've seen lots of guys point the transducer sideways.) If it doesn't show an echo, try cleaning the face of the transducer. There is usually a circular portion that is the face of the transducer. Get a plastic scrubbing pad and clean it with a grease cutting dishwashing liquid to start. If it still isn't showing an echo, try a scouring liquid like soft scrub.

Good luck.

[cool][#505000] I don't know how you "flasher guys" do it!!! I could get the same results by sticking blinking christmas lights in a box and watching it flash. I would get just as much useful information!!! [Tongue][/#505000]

For it to work you do have to have it in water deeper then 2 feet.
around the dial is lines that is for depths try to be in water deeper then ten feet to get a good test and turn down the sensitivity until you lose the bottom and then reajust from there.

Try this. Turn it on & place the bottom of the transducer close to your ear. You should hear a series of clicks at the same frequency that the flasher is running. If you don't, you might have a bad transducer. It could be in the unit itself though. If you can, you could thake the thing to a dealer & ask if you could try a transducer they have. That is if the thing ain't clicking. If if doesn't click with another transducer, BIG BUMMER.

Good luck.

One problem with finding another transducer. YOU CAN'T. Lowrance quit making the style that fits their flashers about 20 years ago. I would never have owned an LCD if they still made the transducers with the 1/4 inch "headphone" style plug. When I lost the transducer to my old LFP-250 it would have cost me almost as much as a new fishfinder to get a transducer and have it modified. But now that I've owned a few LCDs I won't go back to a flasher. I don't even like to use the flasher mode of my LCD unit.

Another thing to check is the "headphone" plug itself. Make sure it is clean. Use a pencil eraser to clean it.
