Frozen Lake ...
A Need For Perch ...
Let's say your on the bank of a frozen lake with all of your ice fishing stuff. Where would you go and what would you do?
No lake name available. Just your knowledge.

Chances are, if it's a perch lake there's already a small city set up somewhere on that lake. I'd probably just join the group, although I'd be off a little ways.

assumeing it's safe ice go where there has been fishing activity, if not, start deep mabie 50 and work in shallower till you find the perch, they seem to be depth spicific and on the bottom.

I WOULD LOOK FOR SOME SORT OF STRUCTURE MAIN LAKE POINT THEN HEAD OUT TO DEEP WATER 40 TO 50 FT. DROP A SWEEDISH PIMPLE TIPPED WITH A WAXIE AND CATCH DNNER.

Sounds like most of the guys are saying the same thing. I'd agree with them on the water depth but I've never had a problem catching perch on a flat bottom. If I have never fished a certain lake before and there are no tracks showing where others have been fishing, I would drill my first hole within twenty or thirty yards of shore. I would put a fish finder in the hole and check for fish and depth. Unless the water is only 10 ft deep I would give it a try because like the guys said perch hang out right on the bottom in most cases. Once the fish are found I would drill several holes in the area so you can move around if the catching slows down in your first hole plus most perch lakes are two pole lakes. WH2

I take it you still have a nice set of prunes from your fall earlier in the week. You should read our report from today. A guy fell in not once, but twice, he was venturing to the center to seek deeper water, went in to his waste, then on the way back to his vehicle he went through again. OUCH. I was about 20 feet from him, and went to his aid however he wiggled his way out onto the slush and away from the broken ice before I could get to him.
As for the perch spot, I am itching, I would walk out on 3 inches of ice to fish for perch at this point, granted it would need to be a nice cold clear day and I would need a companion with some rope.
Wish Rockperch would ice over NOW.

I would add one more suggestion. If you are fishing in a (certain)lake (X) that has submerged trees and bushes, these are money on the hard deck for perch especially later on in the season. I will drill near a clump or find submerged ones with a finder or from summertime experience. They will be crawling with perch. Same for docks above deep water.

I damn near lost one of my toes, it took about 45 minutes to get the movement back, and it still doesn't feel quite right. OUCH.

You should be banned for even mentioning fishing for perch.

doggonefishin is right on the money, slayed many a spiney fishin this kind of structure! Of course in the senario outlined by utbass I would be packing some of that perch meat saved in the freezer from last summer where legal. No bigger than 1" pieces mind you!
Happy Fishing!
