Strawberry report 12/10/05
#1
The original plan was to head to Scofield today but after reading MGB's post last night about mud creek it didn't take me long to change my mind and head to Strawberry. We (myself, my dad, fishingminnisota and his son, and another friend and his 2 kids) arrived about 6:45 to a balmy 12 degree's (seemed warm after getting down to -3 in Heber). Met up with Fishingpro40 in the parking lot and discussed our assult on the fishys at mud creek and headed out. The walking was easy down the hill and onto the ice where there is about 2 inches of snow on top. We were fishing by shortly after 7. The ice where we were was about 5 inches of good ice. FP40's buddy landed 4 fish before any of the rest of us could even put one on the hard deck. We landed a few nice slot cutts and pretty soon the jigging jedi master himself (MGB) rolled in and it was a pleasure to finally get to meet him after exchanging many many PM's (and him answering way too many of my questions) over the last year. He is a great guy, a great fisherman, and a real asset to have as a regular member of this board. thanks again for all of your help! Soon after Thekillerbee and his dad showed up as well as Icefishinggod and his buddy and everybody set up shop and went to catching some fish. The action never did get hot and heavy but there were enough fish coming through to keep everyone happy. My group landed about 20 fish (4 adults and 3 kids fishing). My dad schooled us all today catching 9 of those fish in addition to the 2 nicest cutts of our group (21+ inches) and a fat 3+ pound rainbow. Later in the morning another BFT member came by for introductions (I told you I would forget your name...starts with K and you work with Kastmaster) and it was nice meeting you. We were the first to leave at about 10:45 so we could get home and keep the wife happy. It was a fun morning. Hopefully FP40,MGB,TKB, IFG, and K... will post up how they did for the morning and hopefully the action picked up after I left.

Glad you were able to get out! I was hoping to join everyone up there again, but ended up stuck home babysitting all day. Just about killed me!! Did you fish in the same area MGB and I were in yesterday? Was there alot of people in general up there besides BFT'ers?

Yes we fished the same area as you guys did yesterday. My group was about 50 feet closer to the parking lot than your spot and TKB and IFG were about 50 feet out toward the lake past your spot. So we pretty much had it surrounded. I didn't count how many people were on the ice but it was like THE GRAND OPENING AT CABELAS![Tongue] Just kidding, not really. I expected more people but there was maybe 50-60 total at mud creek. Everyone was spaced out on both the north and south banks and everywhere in between. No one seemed to really be hammering them like you two did yesterday. But a great day!

Good to finally meet you BigCat. It turned out to be a good turn out of BFT folks, too bad the fishing wasn't as hot as it was yeaterday. TheKillerBee was the jigging master today he must of caught twice the fish as anyone else, at least me anyway. IceFishingGod did fairly well also. I ended up with a dozen the biggest was 22".

Mateo, I drove past the Chicken Creeks and seen a couple ice fishermnan at Chicken Creek East. I bet it has less than 4" of ice. CE and the ladders was not iced up yet.

[cool]Be careful about that "I like less crowds" comment, Randy. That could label you a "fish snob," and you DON'T want that to happen.[Tongue] Next weekend at Mud Creek (tomorrow too, probably) will be the "grand opening at Cabelas" out there. I'll be fishing a different location at 'da berry next Saturday (unless Rockperch is on). I want some Pigout Perch Chowder...YUMMY!!!

Good luck to all going out to the berry soon, and BE SAFE!!!

Mean Joe Green was alive and well today! Thank you very much. It sure was a nice day to be on Mud Creek. It's the best day I've ever had there. It was also really good to meet everyone, bigcat, fishinpro40, and company. I'm sure I forgot some names, I'm really bad with that. The weather was pretty nice until a little after noon when the dreaded wind picked up. The fishing was pretty slow after noon as well.

We took the sleds around to Renegade. The bays are all frozen, however most ice looked quite thin, with lots of fracture lines and water coming up through. The only large patch of open water was out by that little island near the meadows. We did not go down and check ice depth though. When I get all unloaded I'll post a pic or two. I ended up with only one near the slot, and the rest were right around 18-20, with one dink bow. Sure was a nice day to be on the berry.

It was really nice to meet you guys. I always enjoy putting a face to a name. Dan and I started out really slow. I mean really SLOW. I think TKB and his dad, FP40 and MGB had a couple dozen on the ice before we had a hit. We moved out in deeper water (22') and the action picked up around 9 o'clock. In 45 minutes Dan and I landed numerous fish including a few double headers. It went that way until about 11 when things slowed down again. We nickled and dimed them until about 3:30 when we decided to run around the back side to take a look at Renegade. Chartruse was the color of the day for me, Dan and TKB's buddies Brad and Dennis. I had the honor of including the term JEFFING in their vocabulary. Not that I was pure by any means, I pulled a few hat trick jeffings today myself.
I had never fished Mud Creek before and was surprised how well we did. Once again, great to meet you guys and I look forward to seeing you in the future. If you see me on the ice stop by and say hi (I'm hard to miss, kinda like a clown at a funeral).
Oh the Strawberry special was not so special today. Although it did get me one to post for challange.

We also made it up to Mud Creek yesterday. We got there just a little before light and were the third truck in the parking lot-red Toyotoa with Inside Out Window Cleaners on it. I am not sure if that was you guys next to us or not. We ended up fishing the North side in about 19' of water and did well. We talked to another group that only caught 1 fish out of the five of them and I saw another guy fish all day with no fish. Pretty slow day for them. Did not really find a hot lure or bait. Usual stuff worked again. I figured that big group were BFTers, but the chance of getting a big one kept me put. One funny note about that is that while I was jigging, I was watching my line and saw a cut literaly swimming right under the ice and ran into my Fishin' Buddy finder! I just laughed, then reeled up and caught him! We actually saw a few cruising right under the ice. Anyone else? Felt great to get back on the Berry again on the hard water. Jake

Sliverslinger,
yes that was us right beside you. FP40 was the 1st car in the lot and we were the second one (the white chevy 4 door pickup with infiniti construction on the side). Too bad we didn't get to meet. We need to wear neon BFT beacons or something[Tongue]. I saw where you guys walked to on the north bank. Pretty funny about the fish bumping into your FF. I wasn't really watching down my ice hole looking for fish but maybe I should have. I saw fish on the finder ranging anywhere from 8 feet down to the bottom and we caught fish at all water levels but didn't see any right under the ice. How many fish did you and your buddy catch? Were any over the slot or bows?

UTBASS---my only digital camera is one that my wife won't allow anywhere near water. Need to get a cheeper one so it wouldn't be quite so tragic if it gets a little wet.... Need to get me one to take pictures (evidence) of those beautiful fish..

Cableguy-- We were fishing 20 feet deep and the others we talked to were 18-22 feet.
