Strawberry - 12/11/05
#1
Hooked up with Fishcrazy about 6:20 am and headed out to Strawberry for a day on the lake. We met up with BigPapaFish at Mud Creek, and after we got unloaded and did some necessary watercraft prep, we all launched and headed out on the bay. Because the weather cooperated and we enjoyed pretty good surface conditions, we made good speed to our intended destination. After finding a suitable site, we jointly decided to fish in close proximity and anchored up in about 21 to 22 feet of depth. We then commenced to jig our way into some fish. There were quite a few other anglers on the bay as could be expected. Nevertheless, it seemed that everyone had enough space for even the longest of casts.

The fishing was successfull and all three of us got some nice ones. We primarly jigged tubes tipped with chubs, shiners or crawlers. The water temp on my readout hovered around a temperature range that would have made swimming or water sking a little uncomfortable. We marked fish all over the water column, but I think most of the fish caught were in about 15 to 18 feet.

A person couldn't have asked for better weather to be out on the water - it started out a little chilly, but warmed right up when the sun hit and there wasn't hardley a breath of a breeze. That was nice, as it allowed for nearly perfect verticle jigging.

It was the maiden voyage of my recent refit of my fishfinder to the newest application and I must say it performed flawlessly inspite of the need to adjust the angle of the mount to reduce the sun's glare. I was treated to my first opportunity to watch my jig in real time in this new configuration because of how I had the transducer oringinally mounted on my trolling motor. Previously I had been limited to use my Fishin Buddy for this type of fishing, as you are probably aware, it does not have Real Time Sonar, but the Bottom Line could be moved because of it's portability.

All in all, another great day to be in the outdoors and on the water fishing. Great company, Great conversation and great weather in which to enjoy them !

I took a few photos of the bay and some of the anglers enjoying a nice outdoor outing on the water - a panarama kind of approach.

Warning: If any of you were there, you might see yourself here.

No, I left "Tiny" and "Dainty" at home for this trip. I didn't want to have to haul them around in the watercraft and then have to attend to the little yappers all day. Besides, we took Fishcrazy's vehicle and it was all loaded with gear - there's nothing worse than having the two puppies sit on my lap for a trip that long.

Chuck, you have a flair for writing reports, but alas me thinks you are taking a little liberty with your terms on ice fishing versus the soft water jargon.

Kent, You're absolutely correct. However, because I was attempting to communicate on a fishing forum, I fell back into the habit of using the colloquial "lingua franca" of BS'ese. In the future I will try to emulate your example of writing in the Elizabethan style, or mayhap, even the Shakepearian.

Thank you for the observation.

[cool]Chuck,
Nice report and pics! Glad you were able to get out and fish with somebody to show you the ice-ropes at Strawberry. That's one heck of a fishery and it sure is fun to sit above the hole and fight that fish but not see how big he is until right before you bring him up!

So, how many did you guys catch, and what was the biggest one? Any 'bows caught? Good luck on your next trip out there.

Yesterday, Fencekid & I went to the Berry as well. I didn't see us in your photos but we showed up around 1pm drilled about 1/2 dozen holes and went right to work. Using white tube jigs with smelly jelly missed a few bites and then pulled in a nice little cutt. I missed a couple more strikes, switched holes and didn't catch anything else.

Fencekid was skunked which rarely happens so the Smile on my face from just the one fish lasted the rest of the day (still lol!) He usually outfishes me. We were only there for about 2 hours & now the fever is on [#ff4040]hotter[/#ff4040] than before. That's what just one fish will do to ya!

I'm headed out again hopefully Wednesday if not definately this coming weekend.

Hope to meet some BFT'ers out there. Till then the [#ff0000]Fever's Burning![/#ff0000]

I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I think we all caught around 5 to 7 each. And, I think all of us got a 20 or so incher.

BigPapaFish got some photos of fish and maybe, Fishcrazy did as well. I forgot to take any photos of them - The pictures I took were after the fishing had slowed down to almost nothing in the afternoon before we left.

[cool]Nice report, Anglin Angel! Congrats on your cut. If you guys get there at about 7:00 next time you'll notice your success rate will skyrocket! Good luck next trip. Hope you get into some big ones!

Is there a little bit of slush on top now? Noticed from your pics that maybe the "little warmer" weather has put a little on the ice from that skiff of snow on it. Ice getting thicker or staying the same? 5-6"

Thanks for the report! Smile

Yes, there was a little slush that developed in the afternoon - about an inch or so in spots - it wasn't all over the ice cap though.

Where we were, the ice that we drilled was around 5 inches.

Usually our fishing adventures start in the wee hours of the morning. Yesterday was one of those days that wasn't really planned. On the spur of the moment we went up just to check things out & drop a line. We knew we only had about 2 hours time to fish but if that's all ya have so be go fish. I had someplace to go about 5pm and it was already noon. So what the heck..I said yeah and off we went. We arrived back in the city a little late due to the ridiculous road situation thru Parley's. What a headache. Thanx anyhoot for the tip. Next time up it has to be a full day.

Yea, we had the pleasure of experiencing the Parley's Summit Parking lot as well - I was expecting to see an horrendous accident or something. But it turned out to only be a lane closure for some road construction.

Hey Fishhound
It was great to meet you and do some fishing with you and Fishcrazy. It wasn't a "50 fish day" but it sure was a fantastic day on the hard deck. Some good company, a few nice Berry cutts and about the best weather you could hope for on the ice.

I think AnglinAngel has my tackle box. It went the way of my sunglasses. Hopefully to be recovered as well. I think I should have stayed on the ice. Between leaving my sunglasses on the hood of my car and not seeing them until they fly off the hood of my car, the ride down Parley's canyon and then discovering my tackle box is missing I'm pretty sure I should have stayed a little longer on the ice.[blush]

Boy it sure was worth it though. Gonna try and do it again next week...but maybe just the fishing part and forget the rest.

[#385000]It was good to meet you as well ! For some reason, all three of us had our little challenges on Sunday. Your glasses/tackle box, Fishcrazy's 4WD, and my car keys. I laughed when I saw AA's post about finding a tackle box, and thought to myself - I wonder if that is Bigpapafish's, as I had seen your tackle box perched a little precariously on top of your sled as we took off to go to the vehicles. I do remember seeing it in your sled at the bottom of that little hill though. Hopefully, it is your's and you get back fishing soon. [/#385000]

[#385000]Next time out, let me know if you want someone to talk your ear off or just hang out on the deck with. I can even go first and test the ice for you - of course, being a skinny little twerp like I am, that won't help you too much. [/#385000]
